An upcoming panel is being planned focused on the ideas of Michelle Alexander’s best-selling book, The New Jim Crow. Here’s one of the organizer’s description of what will take place at the event:
It is an in-depth analysis of how our prison population has become the largest in the world and also why there are more African Americans in prison than they were slaves at the height of slavery-and most for non-violent crimes. I was recently part of a community study group that read Alexander’s book. When we finished, we felt obligated to share the research and conclusions from the book with the greater community and began planning this panel which will occur on July 5th 6:30-8:30pm at Portland Community College , Cascade Branch, Moriarty Arts and Humanities Building, Portland, OR.
The planning committee thought that your organization would be interested in attending this community panel. I have attached our flyer with more detailed information about the time, place, and speakers for the event. We would be very thankful if you could help us spread the word about this event where we hope to bring the community together for a discussion on the Criminal “Justice” system, its disproportionate impact on the black community, and the work going on in our community to combat its effects on us all.
