Alberta Rose Theatre
3000 Alberta Ave, Portland OR 97214
Doors at 6:30pm – Show at 7:30pm

ALL AGES

This is a family friendly event, but alcohol will be served

All are welcome! In celebration of MLK Day, and in solidarity with people’s movements the world over – come, dance and celebrate Dr. King’s birthday and his legacy of fighting for the rights of all.

FUNDRAISER

There is no set entrance fee, but donations are encouraged because the event is in part a fundraiser for two Occupy Portland protesters;
David Burgess and Justin James Bridges.

David Burgess is an activist for peace and justice who was marching
peacefully with other Occupy Portland marchers in early November when he was attacked by police and wrongly accused of pushing a Portland police officer into an oncoming Trimet bus. Since that time, David has incurred mounting legal expenses along with medical bills as a result of injuries he sustained when attacked by police officers.

Justin James Bridges is a local musician who participated in the
Occupy Portland encampment. On the last Saturday night at the
encampment he performed at Terry Shrunk Plaza, but by the next night he was hospitalized from injuries sustained when police attacked remaining protesters who were attempting to peacefully hold the encampment after the mayor’s orders to vacate. Since that time, Justin has accumulated thousands of dollars in medical bills and legal expenses.

FEATURING

* THE WANDERLUST CIRCUS (performance) - http://wanderlustcircus.com/
“The ways of the Circus are older than the nightclubs, older than the banks, older than the cities. These most ancient of performative traditions have always existed just slightly to the left of the Mundane World. Now, at the first flickering of the 21st Century, our piebald clan is once again shedding its skin and remaking itself in the funhouse mirror image of The Second Great Depression.”

* THE SPROCKETTES (performance) - http://sprockettes.org/
The Sprockettes are an all-female-identified mini-bike dance troupe that specializes in fun, community, positive body image, and sisterhood. They were founded in 2004, and have been rockin’ the hot pink and black ever since. They function as a collective, making decisions by consensus, and support DIY and value all voices in their day-to-day operations. They stand with the Occupy movement to make positive change to our environment, culture, and society.”

* WESICKBOSS (live soul funk band) - http://wesickboss.com/
“We play Soul Music.”

* Justin James Bridges & Friends -www.reverbnation.com/justinjamesbridges
“Born deep in the heart of the great state of Texas, he started playing guitar in Dec 2003 and has been addicted ever since. With his band Leprechaun Theory he played South by Southwest in 2008 as well as 2010. Now, JJB is a member of The Houston Blues Society and has had the pleasure of working with Local Live Media, an online raido station.” - http://locallivehouston.com/

* MIC CRENSHAW - http://www.miccrenshaw.com/
“Born on the south side of Chicago, and raised in both Chicago and Minneapolis, Mic is a world class MC and poet now emerging on the national – and international stage. After significant music and social work in Minneapolis Mic moved to Portland where he quickly became one of the most respected artists in the Northwest. In 2001, Crenshaw won The Portland Poetry Slam Championship and went on to finish as a national finalist. In the coming years he became the driving force for some of most popular hip hop artists in the region, including Hungry Mob, Suckapunch and Cleveland Steamers, releasing numerous albums.”

* DAVID ROVICS (folk) - http://davidrovics.com/
David Rovics grew up in a family of classical musicians in Wilton, Connecticut, and became a fan of populist regimes early on. By the early 90′s he was a full-time busker in the Boston subways and by the mid-90′s he was traveling the world as a professional flat-picking rabble-rouser. These days David lives with his family in Portland, Oregon and tours regularly on four continents, playing for audiences large and small at cafes, pubs, universities, churches, union halls and protest rallies. He has shared the stage with a veritable of who’s who of the left in two dozen countries, and has had his music featured on Democracy Now!, BBC, Al-Jazeera and other networks. Most importantly, he’s really good. He will make you laugh, he will make you cry, he will make the revolution irresistible.”

* ARLO STONE (comedy) - http://www.myspace.com/arlostone
“Comedian, Occupier, anarchist, and demonstrator. Arlo has been around the block once or twice and will be sure to tickle your funny bone in some of the oddest places imaginable!”

With DJ Support:
* HOYA (world fusion electroswing crunk) - http://soundcloud.com/hoya
Fascinating world fusion crunk electro swing flavored goodness!

* VIDEO MONTAGE ON DR. KING’S LEGACY
* SPOKEN WORD FROM OCCUPY AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS
* FACE PAINTING
