Occupy Cal, the University of California, Berkeley Occupy Movement began yesterday to protest unreasonable tuition hikes among other injustices. According to UC Berkeley’s website, the average undergraduate student, living with their parents and attending university is still expected to pay $15,562 for tuition, fees and books yearly. A figure that increased 83% in the least year. Four years of education would leave the student in minimally $62,248 worth of debt. Students rose up November 9th at Occupy Cal and were met by riot-geared up campus police. Students and teachers are willing to sustain broken ribs to shine a light on the greed of our learning institutions.
Stay strong Occupy Cal! Occupy Portland stands in solidarity with you!
University of California police used batons to beat up unarmed “Occupy Cal” protestors in Berkeley Wednesday night in an attempt to expel the students from their makeshift encampments, triggering a mass rally and sit-in.

I wrote down my thoughts on last night’s #OccupyCal protests, specifically regarding the potential that citizen journalism has for breaking the 1%’s control of the press: http://taiganaut.wordpress.com/2011/11/10/the-golden-bear-awakens/
Looks like you Occupods will be having to move to a new home this weekend. Buh-Bye!
Here is a thought, get a job while going to school. Can’t afford it, go to a Community College first.
Taiganaut, really great article. Hope it goes viral for you.
Berkley, we’re with you.
Watching the students at berkeley getting hit by the police made me sick to my stomach!Shame on them!!!!
“A figure that increased 83% in the least year.”
You mean “last” year.
“Four years of education would leave the student in minimally $62,248 worth of debt.”
Technically true but the average Berkeley student has about $25,000 worth of debt upon graduation. Over 1/3rd receive grants.
