“The NEEDS of the 99% are being Silenced by the WANTS of the 1%”
We had an amazing Launch of Occupy Portland with 5,000+ people marching in Peaceful Solidarity with our brothers and sisters across the globe. We also report over 1600 concurrent viewers watching the event LIVE from our on the ground Live Stream team.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
-Margaret Mead
I’d like to reiterate how effective our Portland Police officers were today, and how respectful in turn our movement was. Good work everyone.
Ryan Georgioff, son of Officer Paul Georgioff (Ret. 2011-PPB)
The Police has been great! I am grateful to them. Keep it clean, keep it peaceful, and leave no trace!
I saw the videos posted and was happy to see such harmony. I was, however, very disappointed to find out that a coupld of people spray painted occupy portland on a cop car. That was stupid and unfortunately things like that make the lot of us look bad. I hope it doesn’t happen again.
You’ve spelled “mobilized” wrong in the photo.
Oh…
Oh God…
Please please PLEASE re-edit the pic to correct the spelling of ‘mobilized’?
It’s “mobilized” not “mobalized.” Cue all sorts of jokes about the unemployed and their resumes and spell check.
I just sent a message to the Portland Marathon folks [info@portlandmarathon.org] to please work with OccupyPortland to allow OP to stay in the parks. Perhaps if others contacted the Marathon folks they would be more inclined to cooperate.
there was definitely more than 5000 people. more like 10,000
I am a big supporter of this effort and i hope this effort will change history from a 15 year old musician
PLEASE correct the text on the photo above, it doesn’t make us look too good– it should be “mobilized”, not “mobalized”. Peace
Respect the marathon. Move. I attended Occupy Portland. I donated $70 to Occupy Portland.
If you want respect, respect others.
Move from the park.
Respect the permit of the marathon.
We walk in PEACE not in turmoil.
Do it.
I hope to continue to support Occupy Portland.
You misspelled “mobilized.”
[...] You shouldn’t be worried about your commute home. You should be worried that things will continue the way they are. [...]
sorry to point it out, but the word “mobalized” in the above photo, should be mobilized.
My family is one of many struggling to make ends meet..husband was laid off in 2008 still no sign of relief in sight (job) and he has 20 + yrs experience in what he does…went from living the dream to no food in the cupboards and not enough money to pay bills .Now that he’s no longer eligible for unemployment it’s all on me and I make a little over minimum wage..supporting 5 people one being a disabled mother….times are trying and the nerves are wearing thin,I’d go get a sec job but according to the state that’d be fraud as I’m a paid live in provider for my mom so I can’t work outside the home…..thank god my man is a jack of all trades master of none and can make money off this or that too bad you need a piece of paper proving you can do this or that other wise he may have a job…. What he brings to the table doesn’t come close to the amount he once brought in…on the verge of loosing everything and there’s nothing I can do,frustrated, scared, please tell me something is gonna give……I’d join in on the gathering but I’m flat broke, not a penny to my name and the next check is already spent….good luck may we get the results we hope for peacefully……blessed be…
No money required to join. With a movement of this magnitude I’m sure your fellow man would love to spend an evening as a driver with you and your family.
Be, not me, I meant to say. No-one is typo-immune!
Hey guys!
I’ve tried to register twice so I can post in the appropriate forums, but I’m not receiving a password…
Hoping you can post this link on the site(among other things)!

thanks for all your hard work,

Last night Jon Stewart showed interviews of a number of business owners on Wall Street. They want the protestors to leave because they said they were coming into their restaurants, using the restrooms and leaving them a mess, and even breaking sinks and stuff while trying to shower in them. They said they come in and use the facilities and don’t buy anything, and they also come in with their bags of feces and ask them to dispose of them. Pretty bad press. You know people are going to focus on the negative, and especially the mainstream media. It sounds like the organizers here have tried to prepare for issues like this, trying to get port-a-johns n deal with trash, etc..but I just think it would be good to keep reminding people in the PDX movement to “leave no trace”, and also be considerate of other community members, their property and their businesses (big or small). Just passing on info – trying to help. Keep on keeping on!
I agree!
Very inspiring yesterday! Will come every week hopefully to support Occupy Wall Street. Great article about yesterdays event at CounterPunch today:
http://www.counterpunch.org/2011/10/07/occupy-portland-is-born-with-ten-thousand-strong/
Passing onto all of you my emotional/spiritual support. If I had known this was to take place I would join in. I would have rearranged my work schedule (I own a small business in Lafayette, Or). Today I am proud to be an Oregonian. Good luck and when I can I will join in!!!!
“WE WILL ME MARCHING, PEACEFULLY THROUGH OUR STREETS DAILY!”
Can you post/announce when the marches will be for this weekend and next week please!?! I want to plan travel from Corvallis tomorrow morning. Want to attend marches for several days. Need to know when and where they will be.
Thanks for everything you folks have already done to get this thing off the ground. Need to keep the momentum going!
I commend the effort and will be there this weekend.
However…even though we have observers to ‘hold the police’ accountable…will this also apply to any renegade or ‘wildcat’ demonstrators that may attempt to disrupt our peaceful demonstration?
I’m more afraid of those individuals that have a hatchet to bury vs the police…:|
Keep on
I was part of the march yesterday. And I hope the movement grows nationwide to include all ages. However, your unwillingness to accommodate the rest of the community in which you live, i.e. the marathoners, I cannot support. You’ll loose the support of the many people my age (65) if you can’t get along with the rest of the community. I won’t be part of it and will look for other outlets for my protest.
Good photo, powerful graphics. For future work, though, please note both instances of “everyday” should be two words, “every day”. The former means ordinary; the latter means daily.
Thanks for being out there.
Hello,
Very honored to be among you all at the march on Thursday. I intend to show up to some assemblies, be a part of the growing movement, and to pass the word along.
Heads up, so to speak. I went to the youtube link looking for word on general assembly agendas and found a video by someone about getting ready to go to to the march or some such. I turned it off after watching the guy smoke from a bong. I do not think this is the sort of thing you want posted there. It certainly turns the mainstream, like me, who are also a big part of the 99%. It also says nothing about what is going on at the general assemblies. I am into freedom of speech but this does not seem to fit the category of your link.
Is there one place where we can get current news and updates? My family and I were at the event yesterday, and would really like more up-to-date info on where we can go today + there are likely a lot of us who are going to join in when we can, but we really need current info. Thanks
Where can I view the live stream ? There is no link here… nor can I access and read comments, so maybe someone could email me ?
Found the comments, sheesh… but not the live stream yet…
Oh lord now I see it. I’m a mess. Thanks.
If a “small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world”, just think what 99% can do.
I was there Sunday and Monday. You are heroes. You are the best. You are what democracy is all about. The battle ahead will be long and hard. Money, BIG money, owns our Congress. PACs and Corporations give money to finance the campaigns of our elected officials, and our representatives have been purchased. Congress is a corporatist brothel. Global free trade equals global fascism as corporations chase the cheapest labor and the cheapest factories. So we race to the bottom while workers rights are evicerated, the environment is destroyed, the rich get far richer, and much more powerful. America is facing a crisis, the replacement of democracy with corporatism and eventually fascism. You are the vanguard. This cause is noble, it is just, and it is urgent! Be United. Be Strong.
oops… typo
We will “ME” marching should be changed to “BE” Just wanted to let you know.
You guys are doing great work.
Thank you using the good writeup. By the way, how could we communicate?
Thanks for this interesting article. I’ve book marked this page because I hope you write more articles soon, I plan to share this.
Thank you to those of you staying strong and standing up for America’s people! I am so appreciative of your efforts!
