PASSED PROPOSALS
- Sunday Jan. 8th Postal Service March to protect postal jobs and post office services.
When: 1/8 – 2PM – pioneer square to Hoyt & Broadway. March is “family friendly” and there are permits.representative from labor on hand, asking for support ( media, street team flyering in particular ), and endorsement of the march.
Background given about delivery job cuts and service cutbacks which congress may be voting on soon: putting the concerns of the 1% above the services needed by the 99%. this is the local union, not national.
- Portland Action Lab’s National Call-Out for a Anti-ALEC Day of Action for Feb. 29th
Occupy Portland calls for a day of non-violent direct action to reclaim our voices and challenge our society’s obsession with profit and greed by shutting down the corporations. We are rejecting a society that does not allow us control of our future. We will reclaim our ability to shape our world in a democratic, cooperative, just and sustainable direction.
We call on the Occupy Movement and everyone seeking freedom and justice to join us in this day of action.
There has been a theft by the 1% of our democratic ability to shape and form the society in which we live and our society is steered toward the destructive pursuit of consumption, profit and greed at the expense of all else.
We call on people to target corporations that are part of the American Legislative Exchange Council which is a prime example of the way corporations buy off legislators and craft legislation that serves the interests of corporations and not people. They used it to create the anti-labor legislation in Wisconsin and the racist bill SB 1070 in Arizona among so many others. They use ALEC to spread these corporate laws around the country.
In doing this we begin to recreate our democracy. In doing this we begin to create a society that is organized to meet human needs and sustain life.
On February 29th, we will reclaim our future from the 1%. We will shut down the corporations and recreate our democracy.
Join us! Leap into action! Reclaim our future! Shut down the corporations!
Want to get involved in the action spokescouncil that brought together the N17 protests? We have changed our name to the Portland Action Lab and are continuing to planning this action, which is similar to our previous action N17 – Occupy the Banks. If you want to get involved contact us at !
- Candidate Town Hall
This proposal would empower Occupy Portland to host a “candidate town hall” with the Oregon Working Families Party. Using a spokes-council style model, we would facilitate discussion about the issues facing the City of Portland with the public and the candidates running for mayor and city council.
Structure
The forum will be held on January 28th at PSU Hoffman Hall (holds 200-300 people). The three hour meeting would consist of:
- Occupy Portland facilitates a spokes meeting to discuss issues facing the people of Portland. This proposal recommends, but doesn’t require spokes to organize around issues. Candidates arrive and are present for two hours:
- Oregon Working Families Party has testifiers ask questions on behalf of the Portland community, groups who have been asked to speak include: Oregon Banks Local, Economic Fairness Oregon, Sisters of the Road, and the Albina Ministerial Alliance.
- Occupy Portland facilitates the questions and concerns raised during spokes.
Final details would be left to people interested in helping to organize the event. The format of the spokes would be left to the facilitation team. We would help publicize and livestream the event, and do our best to ensure we can provide food and,or drink. WFP will rent the space. They would also help organize and publicize.
Why?
This event: Demonstrates how a direct democracy model works and why it is powerful. Broadens the reach of Occupy Portland to include people in the community who have not participated in marches and direct actions. Provides a new tactic to attract attention to the issues of the 99%.
All registered candidates for city council and mayor, regardless of party affiliation, size of bank account, or theoretical ability to win, will be invited. A goal of this event is to make sure all voices get heard – including the most important voice of all: the voice of the people.
AMENDMENTS:
- OP will not and does not endorse political parties or candidates.
- OP encourages direction action outside of the political process.
Contact Simon to get involved -
- OPDX (Occupy Portland) and OWS (Occupy Wall St) institute “theme months” for core messaging.
The theme would act as inspiration and guide. January would a trial month targeting “Corporate Personhood”. The trial would see if this is feasible. If OWS passes this proposal as well, and chooses a theme month for February, then OP will join OWS in solidarity with their theme. Presented by Professor Patrick.Further details to be after the trial. The idea is that for following months OP and OWS will alternate. Tony Z. originally from OP is at OWS, and is working on this from their end.Contact Patrick to get involved –
