Who’s blocking traffic now? Just after 5am, a group of about 60 cyclists used the human mic and basic traffic laws to non-violently force riot cops to yield the street, effectively putting and end to the aggressive police presence at SW 3rd and Madison, at least for the moment. I’ve never seen spontaneous coordination among cyclists affect such sudden and profound change in police tactics.
There is clearly a strong strategic role for cycling in this revolution. We need more bikes. Tell your friends.
I would like to remind this movement that it is called Occupy Portland/Wall St./Everywhere, not necessarily “Occupy Chapman Park”. What’s so wrong with occupying a new park? Why not the Waterfront where the movement has more space to grow and would be more in the city’s eye? The righting of economic injustices has little to with seizing and holding a city park. Holding and defending land is a classic war strategy, not a peaceful protest strategy. You guys have made your statement, now let that park heal. Tribal communities, such as Occupy has become, have always been nomadic, for many reasons, but not least would be their concern to do as little damage to the environment as possible. Even if the police never came and Sam Adams never signed that eviction notice, you would still have to leave just for sanitation reasons. At some point the soil will be saturated with urine, animal feces, trash and litter, discarded and rotting food, etc. By moving to a new location every so often, the movement does less damage, creating a smaller bill for the city, exposes more people to the cause, and fulfills it’s role as a tribal community. Please consider the Waterfront. It’s time to grow.
Stop vandalizing our city parks! Some of us actually work and pay the taxes that have to now go to cleaning your shit up.
I am a 65-year-old retired teacher recently moved to Portland from Ashland, OR. The majority of people I know are frustrated with the direction our government and corporations are headed. In fact the lines between people we have elected to be our voice and big money lobbyists and corporations has been erased. It seems to most of us that our political system is so corrupted by the money mongers that we no longer have any kind of real voice in turning the situation around. The Occupy Wallstreet movement has been embraced by so many people from so many different points of view because we want our voice back. The bipartisan standoff which has stopped our federal government from doing anything has to stop. I think individually we can add to this collective agreement by looking at what part each of us plays in supporting those corporate systems in where we put our money and how we spend it. In addition pressure needs to be put on politicians elected from our various states to do what they were elected to do — make ethical and fairs decisions. I support Occupy Portland and appreciate how city government and police are being creative in keeping this peaceful.
TO ALL OCCUPY PORTLAND KEEP FIGHTING DO NOT GIVE IN AT ALL KEEP FIGHTING AND KEEP IT GOING
FINAL SCORE:
Cops & Sanity: 1 Occupy Homeless Encampment: 0
Hope all you dirtbags go back to “occupying” your mom’s basements and the underside of our lovely bridges. Take your meds. Get a fucking job. Direct your efforts to more constructive and peaceful forms of change. Frankly, the cops showed remarkable restraint. I was hoping for more broken skulls for you shiftless morons. Stop wasting our tax dollars and find better things to do with your stupid lives.
The 99% of Portland residents wants the 1% “Occupy Portland” to clean up and leave ASAP. We support free speech but we do not support vandalism or disruptions to residents and businesses in our great city.
The storm troopers are a really offensive site. They are just looking for an excuse to hurt people. None of that will help us address the abuses of Wall Street. Please keep your attention focused on the reason for the Occupy movement. Please just walk away peacefully and regroup somewhere else entirely.
I know you won’t publish this because you only believe in free speech when it benefits you…….You self serving idiots. We were’nt there to “protect” you, we were there to hopefully see you get your asses booted from our park. Unfortunately that didn’t happen, but alas, we got it this morning! You are all complete failures and disgusting losers. Thanks for the entertainment!
