Members of Occupy Portland Arrested in Police Raid Early Sunday Morning in Jamison Square

Portland, Oregon – Before 3:30am Sunday morning, 25 peaceful protesters from Occupy Portland were arrested by the Portland police at Jamison Square. After about 600 Portlanders marched against anti-camping laws, police brutality, and growing wealth inequality, the protesters decided to stage a sit-in at Jamison Square. About 450 supporters surrounded the park and cheered the protesters seated peacefully in a circle in the center. Six mounted police and approximately 65 police in riot gear pushed supporters to the sidewalks and conducted the arrests over a period of several hours. Mayor Sam Adams arrived on scene during the arrests and expressed that he was only there to observe, but did not order the arrests to cease. At one point, a woman was pinned between two mounted police horses while standing on the sidewalk in support of protesters and another supporter’s bicycle was crushed in the incident.

Members of the sit-in released the following statement:

We, the arrestees at Jamison Square, stand in solidarity with people in Oakland, Atlanta, Chicago, and other cities where aggressive police raids and 2,826 arrests have attempted to forcibly disperse peaceful assembly and political protest. The occupation movement condemns police brutality as well as the unjust and growing inequality of wealth, resources, and political influence in the nation and world.

We condemn police brutality both locally and globally. On Tuesday morning, over 500 police in riot gear attacked the Occupy Oakland encampment, arresting over 70 people and destroying protesters’ property. By that evening, upwards of 1,000 people marched through Oakland to continue the protest when police began shooting rubber bullets and throwing concussion grenades and tear gas directly into the crowd, injuring several nonviolent protesters. Scott Olsen, an Iraq war Marine veteran, was hospitalized for critical injuries. Here in Portland Aaron Campbell, a young African-American man, was murdered by Portland police officer Ronald Frashour** (Please see editors note below).

The Occupy Oakland movement has called for a general strike and mass day of action on Wednesday, November 2. The arrests here in Portland Sunday morning are only the beginning of what will be a battle for the rights of citizens to peacefully assemble and protest the growing inequality of wealth and resources.

To protest the arrests in Portland, call Mayor Sam Adams at 503-823-4120.

– END –

This press release has not been endorsed by the Occupy Portland General Assembly.

**Editor’s note: Occupy Portland would like to point out, as has been noted by several people, that the death of Aaron Campbell was in no way associated with the Jamison Square occupation or resulting actions. It was a separate and unrelated event. The present wording of the press release does not make this clear.

There is no police brutality on this matter in PDX. I was there. No one got “crushed”. I was there. If a bicycle was mangled, then it was voluntary. There were NOT 600 people there, 100 tops. I was there. Your attempts to make this more than it was is laughable. What you dont’ seem to get is this is PDX and it’s very different than NYC, Oakland, Atlanta, etc… Start posting your GA Assembly proposals on line for the rest of the 494,500 99% of PDX to vote on. You are NOT practicing anything close to the democratic process…since when does the will of 500 speak for 494,500 people? When were you given a mandate by 494,500 people? I didn’t vote you in and I can’t even vote you out. You are exactly the same as the problem you claim to be addressing, shoving YOUR methodology down people throats. Get focused on the problem and stop picking on groups of people within the 99% who make more than $50,000/year. If you can’t figure out a way to represent EVERYONE in the 99%, from $0/yr to $379k/yr then pack up and go home. Get some integrity people.

  2. Seriously? on October 30, 2011 at 10:52 am

    A. WTF does Jameson Square have to do with Wall Street
    B. WTF does Jameson Square have to do with Oakland

You guys are that bored that you have to intentionally harass city government? Do you even know the difference between city and federal government systems? Wow, we need more funding for our schools, because apparently the school system has failed to teach you basic structures of our society.

  3. deception on October 30, 2011 at 11:15 am

The unfortunate police shooting of Aaron Campbell occurred in January 2010, almost two years ago and is in no way related to Occupy Portland. Referring to this incident in the same paragraph as the unfortunate injury to Scot Olsen in Oakland is deceptive and appears to be deliberately intended to mislead readers into believing that this shooting occurred during the Occupy Portland movement. The woman who was “pinned between two horses” placed herself in harms way by not moving. There were more than adequate spaces to lock up bicycles away from the center of the park…the bicycle was “placed in harms way”. This type of “reporting” is deceptive and self-serving.

Wait, aren’t the police part of the 99%?

  6. ani on October 30, 2011 at 1:58 pm

There were well more than 65 police in riot gear. I estimated 140, at least 35 per side of block (they ringed 3/4 of the square, with a natural barrier across the east side), and at least a dozen roaming about, around the east side and in the center.

    • clyde on October 30, 2011 at 3:50 pm

I was there from 345 when there were 6 officers on horseback and about 15 on bicycles to well past the 0300 or so final call when there were approximately 60 odd officers on both sides of the square and another 6 on horses. Of course they were wearing protective gear and so were the horses. Yea, it looks intimidating, but how should they protect themselves from the potential of unanticipated violence?

Here’s what’s weird, counted about 24 people being cuffed and loaded into cars and vans but as of 400 pm today, only 9 have been booked.

This was an extraordinarily theatrical, well paced and patient incident that really does not match up with the exagerated OP press release description. Something fishy in all this…

    • taiganaut on October 31, 2011 at 3:38 pm

Your estimate is way high. There were not 140 police present.

really good press release guys! i wish i didnt have prior engagements today or i would have been right there with you!

  8. Bryan on October 30, 2011 at 2:29 pm

It says to protest the arrests call Sam Adams… Can I still call if I want to thank him and ask him for more?! Thank you City of Portland for stopping these idiots from “occupying” another park! Now if only you would kick them out of the two they are destroying in downtown!!!

  9. Eric on October 30, 2011 at 2:30 pm

Screw off Occupiers. You infringed on the rights of the hundreds of people who live facing Jamison Square. You kept people awake between midnight and 4:00ish through your noise ordinance violations. You are really lucky that I’m not in charge because had that been the case I would have used fire hoses, tear gas, and dogs to rid the park of your ilk within 20 minutes rather than over the multiple hours that you assholes created noise disturbances.

Today I was walking through a park two blocks from Jamison Square, Tanner Springs, and your group had defaced that park by pasting a large poster on a wall in that park. I ripped what I could down and as I was exiting the park, a city employee showed up to remove the poster and thanked me for taking down what I did. She then spent another half hour or so, cleaning the glue off. So, thanks loser Occupiers for defacing still another park and costing the taxpayers even more money.

You represent the bottom 1% of society (and I’m not talking about income or wealth). All you’ve succeeded in doing by continuing to occupy parks and violating city laws is to get more people to hate you and your marxist beliefs. I hope we have an early deep freeze and you all succumb to hypothermia.

    • Roseanne Lasater on October 30, 2011 at 3:11 pm

The lucky one is you, that we are non-violent cause reading your hateful rant would be enough to earn you an ass-kicking from most. We believe in freedom of assembly and of expression, and we will protest anywhere we please in our public spaces. Sleep well.

      • simon on October 30, 2011 at 4:31 pm

I want to protest on your dying mothers lawn. Screaming, yelling, smoking, being a f***** idiot we’ll do it all. Please invite us over.

      • Eric on October 30, 2011 at 8:22 pm

Bring it. I’d love to have one of you losers take a swing at me. I’d love nothing more than to be able to claim self defense in order to beat the living tar out of your group. You are the selfish ones wanting to take what others have earned and redistribute it to the indolent. The true 99% are tired of your nonsense and that you have cost taxpayers over $200,000 in park clean up and additional policing. Get a life.

    • Fritz on October 30, 2011 at 4:47 pm

@Eric, I whole heartedly agree with what you are saying. I understand what this movement was about, but fail to recognize where it’s going? I work downtown, and have observed this protest from the beginning. It’s really hard to take these people serious when all the do is destroy our parks, and demand that someone take responsibility for there mistakes in life.

    • MW on October 30, 2011 at 7:54 pm

Eric – could not agree more. I was there for the entire thing, and actually had a kid (who appeared to be a very active “leader” in the group, had a bullhorn and everything) spit in my face after I asked him to tell me, in one minute or less, what his one year plan was for the occupy “movement” in terms of actual plans that could make a difference. He was very lucky that there were several officers right next to us, or he would have been returning to the shanty town health “clinic” with serious need for some first aid. C

    • Steve on October 31, 2011 at 7:44 pm

      Well said, Eric.

These Occupiers can’t tread on the rights of others fast enough to obnoxiously express their ‘free speech’.

If I had a condo by Jamesion Sq, I would have been throwing rocks out my window at the guy using a loud speaker at 2am.

Portland’s citizen’s must have the most Sensitive Ears On the Planet. The city has a vital urban DIY music scene and Clubs that are constantly harassed by Police to lower the Volume.. Even in the daytime!
My guess is #1′s Child’s tantrums probably Shreik above the Draconian levels permitted, day and night.

So Portland ignore’s it’s Music scene, but invites Film and Tv shows in to town. Um Double Standard much?
And hello, when you live On A Square facing out, you have got to be a moron to Expect quiet…

A stakeholder in the #PDXpunk scene, till you kill it. And you all know how Bad Emergant Music Scenes are for the Pacific NorthWest. Sarcasm intended. There be Swine in the Pearl District..

  11. simon on October 30, 2011 at 4:28 pm

450 thats a joke!!! I was watching and counted less than a hundred. Everybody else in attendance were local residents hoping these inconsiderate uneducated individuals would be carried off without causing our police force any more headaches. You already have a camp, is that not enough? Do you really think that the residents surrounding Jamison square are unaware of your ideas. I’m hoping you realize you lost a lot of support from a lot of people. You are not the 99%, please put your efforts to better use and become a positive contributor to society.

    Thanks.

  12. jody on October 30, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Loved it..It showed how well Sam and the people that work with him protect their Pearl..Cannot tell you how much taxes have went into that area. It also showed me a 55 year old working woman whom has lived in Portland all my life..HOW RUDE and uncaring the people in the Pearl are. And showed me much improvement in the way Portland Police handled it. They do not have a good past.It also showed how OP is progressing and willing to stand up and make a point. But remember some parks they really protect depends on where the money is..So get over it Pearl go back to your rude nasty uncaring ways..OP PUSH ON>>>>>>>

    • Cara on October 31, 2011 at 12:48 am

Such an offensive comment. My three children are raised and gone. I worked in education for 38 years. I sold my home where my children were raised and moved into a small but comfortable condo in the Pearl. I work part time as an artist and on savings. I take my dog to the park, enjoy coffee where many of the young baristas know me as a regular. I go to my knitting stores and practice crafts. I support many small businesses in this area.

I find your comments to be unfounded, brash, and completely insensitive. Why do you cast anybody in this neighborhood as your enemy? Do you think I am oppressing you? Have I infringed upon your economic livelihood in some fashion?

I understand that you are angry. But you’re directing that anger at the wrong people. I am not a corporate CEO. I am not wealthy. I have what I have through a lifetime of work and savings. I support Occupy Wall Street, but your comment leaves a seriously sour taste in my mouth.

I don’t understand who (or what) these people are, coming out in droves to deny the police brutality and insanity of what happened last night. I WAS there — I was there the entire time. I didn’t watch it on some biased news feed from some Fox affiliate. I didn’t walk past it, shouting a few taunts over my shoulder. I was there.

The incredible chasm between what I saw, and what the news is reporting, really begins to explain why things are the way they are.

Here is my eyewitness account. I offer it as my counter-piece to the naysayers and politically-motivated deniers.

    • MW on October 30, 2011 at 7:47 pm

David – I too was there, and your litte writeup could not have been more skewed and untrue. All of the police officers I spoke with were in fine spirits, realized they were doing their jobs, and were glad to be there to serve. Your dramatic depiction of the whole thing is laughable. It was nothing more than a bunch of uneducated kids with nothing better to do trying to cause a little trouble. Not one coherent message was portrayed..just breaking the law for the sake of getting on the news and creating a sense of purpose in their otherwise boring lives. It was great entertainment (both the spectacle and the many many conversations on the issues I attempted to have with the kids out there)I must admit, but the epic and dramatic blog post was absolutely untrue.

The Portland police were very violent during this peacefull assembly, I should know, I am still suffering from the police brutality from this morning. Portland police have a long history of this type of violence and it needs to stop. I am going to court on Oct 31st at 1:45pm and will tell the court what happened.

    • simon on October 30, 2011 at 11:46 pm

Your perspective David, if a cop pets a dog you’d say he/she punched it. If a protestor was injured last night it was purely their own fault. You knew the consequences of the Jamison Occupation.

If occupation of chapman is not enough and your not getting the public support then maybe the public does not agree with you. If this is the case tough luck, learn how to live within the problems.

    • taiganaut on October 31, 2011 at 3:47 pm

I’m a card-carrying ACLU member, have donated to Copwatch and offered assistance when Godaddy shut down DNS to ratemycop.com. I have absolutely no love for the police and strongly believe that we need about 10x as more public oversight of the police, as well as extremely harsh penalties for misusing their power, violating the law under the color of enforcing it, etc.

The Portland Police, from everything I saw — and I was there from 10:30pm until about 4am — met my minimum expectations for police conduct. There was no “brutality.”

Save the indignant screaming for when they actually do somebody wrong, because if you don’t, nobody will be paying attention any more when it gets to that point. Plus, it makes you look foolish when real police brutality is happening every day all over the country when the cameras aren’t rolling.

At the bottom of not a little of the bravery that appears in the world, there lurks a miserable cowardice. Men will face powder and steel because they have not the courage to face public opinion.

Thank you David. I was there also from beginning of the march until we retook the park after the cops moved out. I left at about 3:30, I think, after marching for about 10 minutes in our reclaimed park. I read your report – it is the best I have read about last night. Honest and heart felt.

It was an inspiring night. One of the best of my life (I’m 59 years old).

I’m still hoarse. I’m still high on a feeling of solidarity with everybody else involved. I’m so proud of what our righteous, and determined solidarity in the face of naked and exposed oppression.

The thing that nobody can know until they experience something like this is how liberating and fun it is! It was a night that will be happily remembered by all of us for as long as we live. All of us, I think, still glow with a kind of (words escape me, but I’ll try) exhilarated, confident and empowered moral authority.

I can’t imagine the police or Sam Adams remembering this with anything other than embarrassment and shame. And, their cowardly actions deserve no better.

Our victory was that we finished in solid control of the moral high ground. That is no small thing. If we fight to maintain that high ground as this movement develops and unfolds, we will burst the hollow power of the 1% and we cannot fail.

The cops trashed the park with their horse shit. Most complaining about defacing parks would gladly cut all of the budgets allotted for caring for parks or creating new ones. Posters can be removed, our country cannot be brought back once its been destroyed and bankrupted by greedy con-artists.

This isn’t about taking money others have earned, it’s about getting OUR money back from corporate crooks who have infiltrated our federal government and use it as a vehicle to funnel our tax dollars to them as a means of shoring up their bad decisions and risky speculating.

I have a good job, I pay plenty in taxes, and I simply do no want those tax dollars to go to rig the “free” market against small businesses and real job creators.

The only ones “tired of our nonsense” seem to be those who haven’t bothered to independently assess what the protests are even about — as shown by your complete lack of understanding. A problem that could be resolved by simply engaging #OWS members in conversation instead of getting information from the corporate media.

I was unconvinced of the action last night, but a number of Pearl district residents in support of having a nearby occupy camp changed my mind. That and the idea that democracy should have a curfew brings to mind communist China, not the US of A.

I am very proud of the individuals who were arrested and the calm they maintained. I was there, and trolls were creating most of the ruckus, and there was a proposal to make it a silent protest if the police left.

Lastly, I whole-heatedly blame the city for the outrageous and unnecessary waste of our tax dollars last night while real criminals walked the streets we wasted time arresting people for sitting in a circle in a park past midnight.

That said, there were occupiers who were being complete ignorant assholes, and one told me “go home, yuppie” for requesting that they stop screaming nonsense into a megaphone. We need to get better at policing our own and making sure that residents of the Pearl know they are part of the 99% also.
