Solidarity with Occupy Oakland

Our Occupy Oakland family was attacked this morning. From their frontpage,

This morning at 5am over 500 police in riot gear from cities all over central California brutally attacked the Occupy Oakland encampment at 14th & Broadway. The police attacked the peaceful protest with flash grenades, tear gas, and rubber bullets after moving in with armored vehicles. Apparently the media was not allowed in to document this repression, and the police established barricades as far apart as 11th and 17th. Over 70 people were arrested and the camp gear was destroyed and/or stolen by the riot police.

A first hand account from a reporter turned Occupier here.

Contact Oakland’s Mayor and voice your concern.

I just spoke with Sharon Cornu, Oakland Deputy Mayor for Community & Governmental Relations. She stated the following:

    1) One canister of tear gas was used (after bottles and M-80 firecrackers were throw at police).

    2) Police did not use rubber bullets or flash bang grenades.

    3) 97 protesters were arrested.

    4) 1 protester was injured.

    5) Conditions in the Occupy Oakland camp had deteriorated over the past week. There were health and safety concerns and many of the original occupiers had already abandoned the camp.

Please note that I am just reporting with the Oakland Deputy Mayor stated during our telephone conversation today at 4 PM. Rather than arguing amongst ourselves about what happened this morning, let’s continue fact checking and contact the Deputy Mayor if her account turns out to be false.

    The Mayor’s office says:

Occupy Oakland and pictures on the scene say differently:

Note the images on this page:

I think that the 9th image down is a spent tear gas canister (I might be wrong).

The next image below that is, I believe, a spent rubber bullet shell.

Note the 5th image up from the bottom. It clearly shows two tear gas canisters (one in the foreground and another in the background).

    The mayor says:

“Who you gonna believe, me or your own eyes?”

Yeah, it seems pretty clear now that the Deputy Mayor was either not informed or simply misrepresented the facts. Bean bag rounds were used yesterday and again today.
