March Route Map
Why?
War and militarism are both deep causes and recurring symptoms of the corrupt system of domination Occupy Portland is opposing. A feeder march will make use of O.P’s occupation site capacity as a staging ground for creative actions directed at various aspects of the corrupt system of domination. The organizers of the Saturday anti-war action have explicitly defined it in terms that connect to OP’s issues.
Event Demands
- Self Determination for the Middle East
- End Militarism
- Money for Jobs and Health Care
- Protect Human and Civil Rights
I would think this is also intended to be in solidarity with the European occupations going off on the 15th. Perhaps this is one way to encourage more people to join the march? This should, in theory, be the first day when Occupy Wall Street marches are happening all over North America, Europe, Australia, and other nations as well. Let’s get in on that.

Showing solidarity with the members of the 99% that oppose war is great! We need more marches and less political infighting within our movement!
I will be with the Occupy Vancouver group on Saturday at Esther Short park from noon til 3 p.m. Hold fast, be strong; we can bring change to our country. 5 1/2 million U.S. jobs lost to so-called Free Trade agreements, 14 million Americans out of work, millions more with no health insurance, 412 billionaires and counting, 20,000 lobbyists in Washington D.C. who have more power over our government than the other 350 million of us. We love our country and will no longer standby while the corporations run OUR government. Be the change you wish to see in the world, join Occupy Portland for our children and their children’s sake.
I am very excited to participate in a meaningful, purposeful march to show solidarity with the global actions for Oct. 15th. Thanks for coordinating and posting this, so that we might spread the word.
Wait, what? Man, you miss one GA, and things just go off the rails.
Hey all, there was a hiccup in communication between March committee and media. We are initially assembling AT THE OCCUPATION SITE at 12:30, then heading all together to the march site to meet the other marchers for the rally at 1:00. The march starts at 1:30. I will also contact the media coalition. Dear person who manages the site, would you mind pretty please correcting this information? Thank you in advance. Naima (March Committee)
Good to see this!!! Hope to make it, but we have the occupy Vancouver march at the same time, regardless, will be there in spirit!
you are losing me. I have been in support of the occupy sense before day one. i have donated food, supplies and time. i have marched. But now you are changing the message? cities all over the country are marching with the same message but not us? you know who is keeping the wars going? the corporations. we need to stop the corporations before we can do anything else. stick with message.
I’m all for protesting the wars and all that, but tomorrow will be much more powerful if we align with the tens of thousands of people, in hundreds of cities and dozens of countries around the world. Why can’t Portland get its shit together? WTF?

That’s exactly what we are doing.
I want desperately to support Occupy Portland but it’s beginning to feel creepy – like a dirty homeless camp. I don’t know, I guess I’ll check out the Tea Party
OCCUPY movement,
Sporting events, Community gatherings, etc.
In addition to the exciting march above, there are groups of us who will visit the Farmers Markets, Saturday market, community gathering centers to reach-out to the broader community.
We will gather in smaller groups (between 15 – 50 people) to PEACEFULLY engage and inform our fellow citizens. We can provide information, share stories, reference literature and create opportunities for dialogue.
This is specifically not a march, protest or ‘sit-in’ (those are available elsewhere). This is an opportunity to be your peaceful self and encourage others to do the same while considering the current worldwide economic situation.
Gathering location ideas (please make suggestions as we’re trying to reach the entire population):
-Farmer’s markets, University Campus’s, Public Squares/Parks where the community gathers, Shopping districts (Hawthorne, 23rd, Mississippi, The MALL
There will also be paper literature to pass along to those who would like further information (please contact me if you are able to design, print or deliver literature to the groups).
Bring your family, an engaging spirit and desire to impact positive, peaceful change. Your voice is the voice of OCCUPY.
The OCCUPY movement is comprised of us all, it’s a human movement.
With appreciation,
~Peter

To those squabbling over mixed messages I can understand. Perhaps a misunderstanding? I think it’s just in conjunction with. War is a very relevant facet of this movement.

A little reading. Good stuff
You kids have lost sight of what this is about..I have walked through you camp have seen drunk people and people shooting up. Being a diabetic myself we do not shoot up in our arms..Good excuse but will not hold up.It is a shame you have made us the laughing stalk in the US..You have turned something important into a place to party and act like drunk addicts..This is a shame you have lost sight..You are now a joke and soon you will loose all your support and be kicked out..Next time leave this to older people whom have a clue what they are fighting for..So just please leave our park and clean it on the way out….Thanks
I would appreciate it if you would tell those shooting up and drinking to leave.
I have also seen this as a problem, and have been very disappointed in our local “movement” myself. It’s rather unfortunate, however, that not nearly enough of the “older people” seem willing to take real risks or give give up any part of their daily lives for what we all are fighting for. Hopefully, I see that change tomorrow. This movement is too important to just drop it. Do you have any constructive suggestions for turning this problem around besides the “just get out” demand?
If you’re looking for intelligent dialogue that more properly represents the movement you wish to experience all you have to do is seek it out. That’s what I did, and I found hope. I found faith in the movement and the strength to move forward, a channel through which I could share my ideas for real action, and an opportunity to meet some incredibly insightful people. A massive social movement takes time and a lot of work; it doesn’t just fall into your lap. All the members of that camp are representatives of those who exist in our society; that’s what is truly democratic about it. To deny that diversity is to deny the meaning of the 99%. This movement has only begun; it will only become more energized and organized with time.
I have to say, after reviewing your site and organization, I’m ashamed to be with the Seattle movement right now. Our website is laced with trolls (un-moderated) and there is a horrible lack of updates and prioritizing of agendas. I wish I wasn’t 3 hours away or I would join you all.
I will say this…banks and corporations are the focus and the reason we’re doing this but the War is linked to it. The War helped our debt get worse so it’s a part of it. I agree with reducing political infighting but also supporting causes that are related. Keep the banks and economy the focus, but KEEP YOUR UNITY MORE THAN ANYTHING. I’m up here rooting for you all. And hopefully we can get it together as well as you guys are.
I have some minor objections to the message joining the occupy movement and the anti-war/militarism movement sends. I agree with both movements and can see certain areas where they overlap. I think drawing attention to financial reality of war and the alarming defense budget we maintain makes perfect sense. However, assuming that one must be a pacifist in order to align themselves with the occupy movement is going to alienate a lot of potential supporters. As lovely as it may sound, 99% of the people are not anti-war. Even within the occupy movement, there are lot of veterans and active duty military. Many of them have returned home from Iraq and Afghanistan and found themselves, like millions of others, jobless and broke. They have been denied benefits, had their homes foreclosed and been forced to fight for many of the basis social services that have been promised to them. While some may well agree that it is high time for the current wars to end, some of them may also not be ready to trade in their fatigues for a tye-dye and march up main street singing, Pete Seeger’s “bring’em home.” Furthermore, while relevant and true, the motto, “end the wars – bring our $$ home,” sounds extremely callous and dehumanizing. Wars are expensive. Money could be better spent at home, but don’t forget about the human capital involved in war and don’t forget that the men and women serving oversees, no matter how much you disagree with the war itself, are also part of the 99%.
Joy writes “Money could be better spent at home, but don’t forget about the human capital involved in war and don’t forget that the men and women serving oversees, no matter how much you disagree with the war itself, are also part of the 99%.”
Our nation has a civilian commander in chief for a good reason. Jefferson, Adams, Washington, Hamilton, Franklin etc. understood that Ceasar conquered Rome only after engaging in long protracted wars against the Barbarians. Good judgment in times of war requires a broad perspective. You have already admitted in your post that these wars are relevant to the current economic decline of our population. So I don’t get what you are writing Joy. Don’t protest the war cause you might upset some U.S. soldiers?
it’s “shemanski park.” come on.
Do you get that we are fighting wars for the sake of multinational CORPORATIONS? You topple them, you clean house in govt, and the wars stop.

Let us show the world we are taking back our government from war profiteers. We need not repeat history. The English were slaughtered in Afghanistan in 1842 and other nations have followed the same well worn path. We are quickly sinking into the same hole. It is truly senseless. On Oct. 15th, 2011 let us march towards the EXIT of Afghanistan. We have more important nation building to do!
