OccupyPortland.org has received an official statement from Amy Ruiz with the City of Portland:
“The Mayor and the Portland Police Bureau did not organize or invite people to march today at 2:30 pm. The Mayor continues to support Portlanders’ right to protest, and has directed the Police Bureau to facilitate peaceful events while keeping Portand moving. The mayor will not be in attendance at today’s march; he is home ill, but monitoring events remotely.”
There is some confusion regarding the marches for Sunday the 9th. My understanding is that the GA approved a march at Noon, gathering at the PSU Park Blocks – see here. Later, another march, below, was announced to the media by the Street Team Committee. Choose for yourself which you will go to, or go to both. More information can be found in the comments to this post, the forums, and facebook.

We have an announcement!
Tomorrow we march! We march with the mayor’s office, the Portland police department and the Portland marathon chief officers. The mayor’s office graciously invited us to join the race, behind the runners at 2:30PM. We follow them from the Rose Quarter, over the Broadway Bridge, along Naito Parkway, West on SW Jefferson to SW 4th to the occupied Chapman Park/camp/headquarters.
Together the city will join in celebration of John Lennon’s birthday, singing his famous song, “Imagine.”
Imagine all the people, living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you will join us,
and the World will live as One.”
This just made me cry, damn you! I will be there.
some confusion as to whether this means there will be a dual march. clarification?
The “People Who Are Leaving Committee” decided that the march back would Start from PSU at 12pm. This decision was brought to and ratified by this morning’s GA.
A Member of that committee who also owns a local entertainment company argued against that. Those members were the ones who announced that the “Gracious Mayor” has allowed us do do something that the committee did not consider, let alone agree on.
This makes me ask:
-Did we elect a person or persons to negotiate with the mayor?
-Who talked to the mayor on behalf of the group?
-Are the decisions of the GA binding unless the mayor and a select few decide otherwise?
-When we decided at this morning’s GA to leave from PSU at 12pm, isn’t that binding regardless of any decisions that the mayor makes?
-Who decided against our bodies wishes because they thought that they had a better idea?
-who is controlling our communications to the public? And how are unapproved decisions making it on to our webpage?
-Isn’t this dynamic the very one we are fighting to Actions like these the institutions we seek to change
-How do these actions empower the self selected few that have made this agreement without consent of the group?
Our actions have “given us” a great opportunity to expose our movement in a favorable light. But what have they TAKEN?
Our movement is against the institutions, systems and processes that that put the wants and needs of a select few over the needs of the larger group. As individuals of that larger group we need not re-create a hierarchy of decision makers, facilitators, ‘police liaisons,’ etc to speak for our movement. If the Mayor wants to communicate something to us let him come to the GA and get in the Stack. Personally do not want to hear another word from the mayors office unless it’s in the GA. His office is NOT our (the GA’s) equal. It is a part of a system that has failed 99% of us. He cannot, will not, nor should not be able to “allow” us anything.
The country is watching us, the world is watching us. Let’s get it right.

AGREE!!!!!
I love you, Portland.
I will be there with my 11 year old son, can’t wait till you all meet him finally, and a perfect place and time for him to join in, crossing all boundaries, a proud day for Portland and the world!!!
I cried too – but I have to ask, there’s no possibility they’re going to sweep Chapman Square while the rest of us are out marching, is there?
Lame.
Why is my previous comment under moderation? it is factual, accurate and def not spam. please post it now and stop censoring the truth of what happened. On that not, I appreciate the acknowledgement of the situation at the end of the GA.
What is the exact location for us 99ers to congregate in the rose quarter?
It seems that if the camp members were to volunteer and help out with the Portland Marathon it would make a strong, peaceful statement of solidarity from our 1%. Don’t you think??
Delightful! I hope there is a way to imagine together at the end of the march!
This march was specifically decided against at the general assembly. The march that was decided on is from the PSU park blocks at noon.

Steve–the mayor and his staff (I work for him) had no role in setting up the 2:30 march. As far as we can tell, it’s a rumor that spread quickly. We do not know how it started.
Is this for real? The cops are going to sing “Imagine” with us? REALLY?
The History Channel made a 9 part series called THE MEN WHO KILLED KENNEDY. The last segment was called THE GUILTY MEN
The History Channel aired this segment a few times and it proved to be the most popular show in the 9 part series.
The History Channel pulled this show off the air and refuse to sell it.
It details the evidence for the FBI assassinating President Kennedy. You can watch this program on youtube

In 1999 the Martin Luther King family sued one of the assassins of Martin Luther King in civil court. They did this because the department of justice would not reopen the investigation after the Martin Luther King family uncovered evidence that the FBI, CIA, and Memphis police had assassinated Dr King. The King family also wanted to enter their evidence into a public record so it could be accessed. The jury returned a verdict in favor of the King family and juror members held a press conference saying it was a clear cut case of the FBI assassinating Dr King. There was a media blackout of the trial. Details of the trial can be viewed here or by reading the book called ACT OF STATE THE EXECUTION OF Martin Luther King
written by the trial attorney William Pepper.

Me too. Both sentiments. Bringin’ the whole fam damily.
Shit is getting done. I have never been more proud of being a Portlander. I will be there. Bells on and tears streaming.
Why is this posted here!? This was not a decision made by the General Assembly of Occupy Portland. This event is not officially endorsed by Occupy Portland. This is clearly written to indicate otherwise.
The official decision by the Occupy Portland General Assembly on the morning of Oct. 8th 2011 was to…
Meet at the South Park Blocks at PSU starting at 8am Sunday (Oct.9th). There will then be a meeting commenced to make a DEMOCRATIC decision about where the march will go. The March will begin at 12pm, and end sometime between 4-5pm at the site of OUR occupation.
Is the march tomorrow at noon at PSU or 2:30 at Rose Garden??
Was this approved by the General Assembly?
IMHO its a SHAME that this got announced as it will most likely split the marches into two smaller marches, when our strength lies in NUMBERS!
Reiterated here:
At this point there are 2 starting points for marching tomorrow, both converging together along the Marathon route after the primary runners have passed.
A large peaceful group of us will march from PSU Park blocks to begin at Noon
Alternately a march from Rose Quarter to begin at 2pm
The intent is for the marches to converge around 3pm along the Naito Parkway near or South of the Broadway bridge.
Both marches finish near 3rd and Taylor and then resume occupation of Chapman Square around 4pm
See the attached flyer for info on the PSU march:

Our peaceful presence is encouraged
Just offering this global observation as a sympathetic member of the public who attended the rally on Thursday (and shouted myself nearly hoarse in the wonderful mic checks human PA system) and also stopped by for a bit on Friday, and plans to participate ongoingly in some fashion over the next year: the “Occupy” movement is far larger than any one grouping, and cannot be contained by the structures and processes of any single group or assembly. Unlikely and even spoof-like though the idea of cops singing “Imagine” is, if there are two separate groups who identify as “Occupy” marching on a given day, that is because the movement has struck a chord and people are running with it on their own initiative. In the broader perspective, this thing is the surfacing of a movement that a great many people have been participating in for at least the last decade, the fruitful intersection of DIY and mutual-aide, of celebratory post-consumerism and leaderless revolution. Huge chops to the people who are actually organizing and occupying so far, but many more are occupying (in a non-trademarked sense) in their own ways, and will only become more and more visible. This thing is an actively co-created tapestry. Singleness of message and effort are important, and so are the unpredictable eruption of people going off on all kinds of tangents, which, if this next year is really a revolutionary moment (and I think it is) will unavoidably happen.
I’m still a little confused. So…. If I show up at PSU as Noon will there be people there or shall I wait till 2:30?
Face it, this was a misguided and unauthorized (by the general assembly) post. However, as there is no designated route yet for the PSU march, why not combine and/or attend both marches? Power in unity and numbers. We’re the 99%, let’s not let pride, fear, or a dislike or the Beatles (I’m a Stones guy) get between us. In love and unity
I totally agree with you!
Don’t you realize: democracy is the reason why we are in this mess in the first place? The movement needs a strong leadership, and the people need to render unabashed support for that leader!
Seriously why can’t you guys be more organized? Please try to not fight about everything …united we are strong divided well you know the rest…
This is both confusing and sadly undermining. You appear to have a splinter group who feels so empowered that it defies the Larger Collective, as well as those who have been trusted to lead. While this is a part of human nature, the desire to climb higher than others already in the tree, I hope you can discover who is undermining your efforts at cohesion and talk them through their anger. Whoever they are, they are creating the appearance of disintegration, which is not what we want.
After this mornings GA meeting could someone please clarify when and where the march starts? Splitting marches is a bad idea. it just waters down the message, makes it look chaotic and gives people something to discredit the movement for. When I re-post the message I want to be certain I am re-posting reality.
The general assembly has no right to declare where “everyone” should march…If some choose to march at one place or another, so be it. The general assembly and the “process” has been quite rushed (occupation started only 3 days ago) and the people who demand that the decisions made by the 30-200 in attendance is ridiculous. The idea behind this “movement” should be awareness…imagine the way it looks to outside spectators as they witness public officials and citizens working together. I will be attended BOTH marches.
The operative word in the announcement was the Mayor “INVITED” us.
Via Mayor Adams’ twitter and Facebook: Rumor control: I did not organize/invite today’s 2:30 #OccupyPortland march, and will not be in attendance (I am ill this weekend). I continue to support people’s right to protest, and @PortlandPolice are working hard to facilitate peaceful events.
Personally, it sounds like we can do both.
While I was not there for the morning GA yesterday, I was for the one last night. I am an eager participant rearranging blocks in my schedule to attend and participate as well as someone encouraging new people to get involved for the first time. With that context, I have a request. Please post the two march alternatives first, then the debate part. It is clearer that way. Clarity is our friend, just like when we make our marching signs.
All in all this is a very good problem to have. Too many exciting marches in Portland to keep up with. I never thought I’d see the day!
A HUGE Thank You to ALL perspectives in this mini debate we are having. This is exactly how we sharpen our process for the tougher challenges ahead.
See you in the streets, loud proud and Sam Adams approved!
Does it really matter where the invite came from? SOLIDARITY! Solidarity with the marathon, police and yes the mayor the 99% elected. Imagine the message of peace and cooperation this would send. Right now the media has announced a time of 2:30, Rose Quarter. This is what the numbers will see this morning while drinking their morning coffee. There is power in numbers. GA, swallow the pride and change your plans. Choose solidarity and remember; there is power in numbers. Peace.
There is no consensus. March whichever you want. We are all together anyways. Peace, love, positive energy, is our strength. Those other negative and fearful energies are what have given strength to the powers we are standing up to now. Unite, be flexible, be nonviolent and strong.
[...] Occupy Portland [...]
Can the 2:30 march folks and the 12:00 south park block folks PLEASE work this out for cripes sake!?
From what I understood of last nights (Saturdays) GA, the morning GA did not have information about the opportunity from the mayor and marathon organizers. If it’s what it sounds like, it makes the most sense for ALL OF US to march TOGETHER!
Hearing that there will be two “rival” marches makes me want to boycott both.
PLEASE POST HERE FOR THOSE OF US WAITING TO HEAR WHAT GOT DECIDED AT THIS MORNING’S GA.
Thanks
Look, I love Lennon and I love that song, and I marched on Thursday, but this is a BAD idea. The time for singing is over. If we are serious about getting the media to listen to us, singing ‘Imagine’ is not the way to go about it. It will marginalize the movement because that’s just what the right thinks of us. A bunch of lefty stoners that think a song will change policy.
John Lennon wouldn’t have cared what the right thinks. The song holds a profound meaning and I applaud you all for singing in honor of John’s bday. Peace light and love from slc, ut.
Imagine no possessions, it’s easy if you try. What a joke! John Lennon was a multi-millionare who lavished himself with the trappings of wealth. His widow, Yoko Ono, who is supporting the Occupy Wall Street movement, is worth $500 million. His son Sean is worth $200 million. His son Julian is worth $40 million. Let them imagine no possessions, I’m sure it will be easy if they try!
You are so absolutely right! This is the time to show that we are serious. Singing songs will only stir images of the “hippie” movement which failed with the larger society. We are something different than a failed movement. We are something new.
I wish we would have talked about this issue for 2 hours rather than arguing over the meaning of consensus at last night’s general assembly. I refrained from “blocking” because of the promise that we would return to the issue of how to organize the marches to be able to attend them both in strong numbers. “You can attend whatever you like” is not good enough for me, personally, as the movement is weakened when we branch off randomly from each other and attend separate marches. I think that last night, regardless of whether or not we agreed if “(90%)” was consensus enough (something I’m not even sure about yet) I think we can all agree that the strength of our message is most important, and that we are organized and prepared. Now, after skimming through hours of information, I still can’t figure out which march to go to or how the turnout will be sufficient when our group is split in 3 (campers on lock down, PSU marchers, and marathon marchers). I have total faith in this movement and the people involved, and know we will only get more organized and efficient with time. I look forward to more actions we can take as a confident, unified group that can address the most pressing priorities with timeliness and efficiency, while refraining from interruptions and excessive back-and-forth dialogue.
That being said, you all are amazing. I’m blown away by everyone’s passion, creativity, and hard work.
I absolutely agree.. You tOok the words out of my mouth. We need to have a strong unified group and we obviously need to stress the importance of prioritizing topics related to events and actions the occupy Portland group will be taking, ESPECIALLY those occuring the next day, on the agenda. We need to stay focused on taking action and engaging the community. I also look forward to more efficient and productive GA meetings.
2 marches are better than 1, more exposure more people, some may even march at both.. We are the 99% and we will no longer remain divided by the 1%..
On the question of which march to attend the PDX march could easily march to the rose quarter in 2.5 hours, to join the 2:30 march.
Win Win We have a full day.
I represent 6 people ready to march today and still, after an hour on this web site, have no confirmed program as to where to meet the march. One group says start at PDX the other at 2:30 with the mayors walk. Looking at the marathon site looks like it is over at earlier afternoon.
I know that there are many more like me out here who are not tweeters, and cannot stand around all day, we come from out of town and have other commitments.
Please get the act together enough so that your supporters can hook up and support when they can!
I disagree, by having two marches it splits us, gives the media a chance to focus on the smaller group and say “the movement is dead, look at how little people that are marching” but that’s my humble opinion.
You are the same people who will fight, cry and scream over the destruction of a Green Sea Turtle egg and not shed a tear over the abortion of a human fetus.
Who has the moral high ground?
Relax….
The solution has been presented, but here it is again:
The NOON march should make their way to the MAX by 2pm and arrive in the Rose Quarter in time for the 2:30pm march.
UNITY. SOLIDARITY.
For those that worry that the 2:30pm march is a sell out, please note the Mayor’s latest message. He will not be there and did not invite, but he supports the right to protest. The marathon, a non government organization, is allowing this, perhaps inviting this, and giving the opportunity for great exposure!
Imagine us bringing up the end of the marathon, and all of those bystanders joining in!
I will have my sound system in tow, blasting not just Imagine, but some more poignant songs as well. I hope to see all of you there, singing along, chanting mottos, and spreading information in peaceful protest of the status quo.
We were told that this was in cooperation with the mayor’s office, and it turns out to be false. So was it true that there was cooperation from the police department?
What a great march today! Real democracy, people working together. Meeting the group coming over the bridge was great.

Thanks to all who peacefully participated in today’s marches.
Your voice and energy are vital to positively impact change.
You can extend continued support to the occupiers throughout the process.
It’s not required that you spend the night at the occupation to participate.
Get involved at whatever level you are able.
In addition, honest, critical thinking will help to inform your decisions throughout.
I recommend getting information from diverse sources and relying on more than simply digital media.

Great march today! Especially in light of the daunting logistics of capitalizing on the Portland Marathon weekend. So proud of Occupy Portlanders’ continuing display of ingenuity and grace under pressure. The increasing demographic diversity only encourages the movement to grow. Peace out.
New York, Denver, Portland. D.C. L.A. They are all the same.
This is the same old pot smoking, dirty, smelly, bunch of anarchists that get out and protest for any cause they think will open the flood gates and get the government , and producers to support them and their lazy do nothing lifestyle.
I must profess to being a little bit confused. So far I hear demands but for everything under the Sun, and a goodly portion of that simply not financially possible or workable. It does not appear to be Democrats, Republicans, or even a liberal/conservative point of view, it seems to be people mostly upset about something?
Now I certainly support the right to protest, but this appears to be more of a party than some political movement?
At least thus far it is mostly peaceful, but it seems to me that leadership and some organization is needed here, otherwise all that will be accomplished is some traffic will be blocked.
Perhaps someone could clarify?

Its still the wrong way about it. In order to get jobs in america then we need to stop the imports. shutting down the shipping docks is what we need. Remember the 1970 trucker protest and what they did to be heard. If your to young to remember they broke out guns also. We need to overthrow the terrorist hiding in our government offices and take back what is ours.
