I will be there! I like the idea someone else suggested, wearing name tags! Especially because so many of us have been talking online here and on the facebook group and community page, it would be nice to put faces to names.

    • John Mulvey on September 30, 2011 at 12:08 pm

I’m extremely happy to see this event come together and am very grateful to those who’ve gotten it off the ground.

This event represents a significant opportunity to wrest our nation back from the greedheads, cynics and crooks who’ve been calling the shots for too long, and I fully expect Portlanders to step up and turn out in large numbers.

A couple things to add to the discussion:

      1) Re Agenda items
      Nonviolence and/or Civil Disobedience training

      2) I really like the idea of name tags, perhaps in place of verbal introductions? Brief introductions have a way of turning into speeches, and this could be a pretty large group.

      3) I hope the event will be staged in such a way as to welcome people getting off work later in the afternoon. Many people will inevitably be unable to attend during the day but will want to join in later. I hope they’ll be encouraged to do so.

      Thanks,
      John Mulvey

Why so late? How long is going to last the meeting? Can i get there at 8:30? .Sry I work so i get off at 8:00.

    • occupyportland on September 29, 2011 at 8:34 pm

The last meeting lasted several hours. People can come and go as they need, so 8:30 will be fine.

  8. 1twistedjew on September 29, 2011 at 11:29 pm

Is there a landmark on the waterfront where people will be meeting? I’ve spent time on the waterfront but paid little attention to which area is which.

    • occupyportland on October 1, 2011 at 3:58 pm

For the next GA meeting it will still be at the Waterfront. The easiest landmark to remember would be Saturday Market, and the Burnside Bridge. We are meeting at the fountain south of the bridge, closest to the river.

  9. Crash on September 30, 2011 at 3:35 pm

    Two lists of demands:
    1. Occupy Wall ST is discussing these 9 rather specific and technical demands: https://occupywallst.org/forum/detailed-list-of-demands-overview-of-tactics-for-d/

    2. The October 6 2011 (Freedom Plaza in Washington DC) has a more general comprehensive list of 15 demands:
    http://october2011.org/issues

These two occupations are now cooperating and interactive, but the 2nd (October 2011) is much larger and better organized. Their demands are thought out for a more fundamental change.

  10. Brian on September 30, 2011 at 3:38 pm

I’m new to Portland. When you say North end of the Waterfront park do you mean the end by the Steel Bridge? I’m coming by MAX, so I want to know how far I’ll be walking.

    • occupyportland on October 1, 2011 at 3:44 pm

Closest to the burnside bridge. If you are taking MAX to any GA meetings, or the actual protest meeting spot, get off at Skidmore fountain and walk to the waterfront.

  11. mycelium on September 30, 2011 at 3:50 pm

IS THIS EVENT HAPPENING AT THE NORTH END OR AT THE SOUTH END NEAR 1020 SW NAITO. THE INFORMATION IS VERY CONFUSING.

    • Owen on October 1, 2011 at 10:03 am

North end by SW ankeny. I understand your confusion, it’s not always well published…..
Spread the word! Natio and Ankeny! Noon october 6th!

  12. Bob Kelly on September 30, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Proposed agenda item, what about forming a message group? What is the message we will be showing at the rally on Oct 6th? Frow what I see on TV, a consistant message that sticks is not present. I only see a lot of frustrated folks with dozens of messages. (kind of like the democratic party ;-( )

  13. sarah bryant on September 30, 2011 at 4:29 pm

Cant make it tonight, staying with family member who had chemo infusion today. Im 69 years old, and hoped my days of protest were over many years ago. But I will be there the 6th, and stay as long as I can.

    Peaceful solidarity indeed, yes.

  14. Madmoniker on September 30, 2011 at 5:54 pm

Shouldn’t we target Federal Reserve Bank on
1500 SW First Avenue during the march.
Having a camp on the Water Front sounds smart.
But isn’t the Banks the issue

    • occupyportland on October 1, 2011 at 3:43 pm

The banks are a large part of the issue, and they will be included in the protest.

  16. alethinos on October 1, 2011 at 10:17 am

Just from all the talk I’m hearing out here in Suburbia there are a LOT of people heading for this. Most will likely be doing the same gig as Wall Street – protest during most or part of the day – head home then back. So we’ll likely see large fluctuations. The Straw has broken the camel’s back and the CAMEL IS PISSED…

    Hey there,

It seems to me that it is imperative that as many people have a working understanding of the consensus and GA model as possible. I posted a link to the doc explaining them on the facebook group page, but it is lost in the shuffle.

    https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1LHPBH__XYmX2FhtslHekfbYwhAy6zxg1HFsEIlZHcL4

    • Rill on October 1, 2011 at 1:09 pm

Thank you for that document. I want to take a moment to thank the facilitators, both that were invited and that stood up(and then sat down). This GA was very difficult to manage and facilitate and get better with time.
Portion 6 of your document seems very helpful, if the facilitators are trained for such a thing. The person in my break out group had no concept of a “stack”, one of the cornerstones of a effective and open discussions. Having two people designated going through the crowd and managing questions would have been wonderful.
Thank you for the information and the suggestion.

BTW Webmaster, is there a way to “bump” or “like” a comment so we can also use this forum as a straw poll?

      • Devan on October 2, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Clarification…I did not compose the GA guidelines .doc, merely passing it along as one piece of vital info fished out of the amazing ocean of ideas expanding on facebook, here, etc. Anyone know who did write it/originally post it? They would be an excellent point person on this…teams could be assembled on Tuesday?

  18. mycelium on October 1, 2011 at 1:27 pm

We should let folks know that one of the best ways to contribute to Occupy Wall St and Occupy Portland is to move their money from big banks to local cooperatives. Now.

  19. Joy Silver on October 1, 2011 at 2:27 pm

We need to PENETRATE THE MEDIA BLACKOUT! I think we need a publicity team. Not only do we need signs but we need Occupy Portland T-shirts, bumper stickers etc. A lot of people I have talked with just yesterday,(neighbors, friends and family) still have no idea about Occupy Wallstreet. I am in disbelief. There will be a lot of people coming and going to the Occupation. We need those people who are out and about in the city of Portland and not at the demonstration to be in recognizable solidarity. Does anyone have access to T-shirt making supplies, bumper sticker or decal making supplies? Or if anyone can donate to the cause, by working with a local shop to get these things made, lets start passing them out. Lets PENETRATE THE MEDIA BlACKOUT!

  20. Rae on October 1, 2011 at 6:58 pm

Hey Joshua, thanks for the post. We’re all new to this and learning together. I think things will continue to grow and evolve naturally as we learn about our group, our needs, and the changes we collectively want to see. I, for one, am extremely excited about the change we can facilitate together.

Hey would you mind letting me know which web host you’re utilizing? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 completely different web browsers and I must say this blog loads a lot faster then most. Can you recommend a good web hosting provider at a fair price? Thank you, I appreciate it!
