We the people approach the community with non-violence. We expect the same.
I think you guys are just asking for it by moving to the Jamison Park!
It seems to me like you guys are trying to start problems, and want things to get violent.
Friends…
As a strong supporter of the Occupy movement, I am opposed to any attempt to expand the occupation into Jamison Square. Remember, the 24/7 occupation is just a symbol. Its size is not terribly important. What IS important is the media/public attention it brings, as well as the ability to bring people to the streets when a call to action is made.
PLEASE DO demonstrate in the Pearl. Do it every day! However, I’m begging you not to attempt to expand the 24/7 encampment or sleep in the park. It serves absolutely no purpose. You’ll greatly lessen the goodwill the movement has acquired in the community and will only antagonize city officials and the police. Again, NO good can come from this.
I love you all. Keep strong and stay peaceful. o/
But why expand to Jamison? What purpose does it serve to disturb this residential neighborhood with protests? Why not protest a government building?
The pearl is a residential neighborhood. Why is this becoming a political battleground? The leadership of occupy is quickly making enemies of people that are part of the 99% and would have supported the cause. Why disturb innocent people, especially families, at their homes?
This move to Jamison with the intention of creating friction with the city is a tremendously horrible idea.
What you Occupiers don’t seem to understand is that you are violating multiple city laws, which have nothing to do with Free Speech. You say you are representing the 99% – but the reality is that you represent the bottom 1-5%. The majority of the 53% who actually pay taxes have no patience for you or the fact that you are costing us all money for additional police staffing, and ultimately park repairs. Sam, Randy and the rest of the city councilors took an oath to uphold the laws of the city of Portland. They have wrongfully chosen not to enforce those laws when it comes to your lame group. Most of us are fed up with this lack of enforcement. If the mayor and city council doesn’t start enforcing its laws, then the city (as well as the major and councilors personally) is going to find itself sued by the 53%. We’ve all had enough of your destructive nonsense. It’s time for you losers to go home. If you extend your illegal camping activities beyond where you have currently been illegally tolerated, there’s going to be a whole lot of trouble coming down the pike.
Here, here! There should be a class action lawsuit brought against Sam and all the commissioners for failure to uphold the laws as they pledged to do. Additionally, this “other 1%” should be sued for the damages incurred to our parks and the other associated costs such as police overtime. We know they have funds….somewhere in someones paypal account. Also, they are clearly planning on harassing and baiting police by purposely planning on breaking the curfew law at Jamison. This is clearly stated in their minutes. Another legal action on this one.
They absolutely do not represent me, or the majority of law abiding citizens working for a living, trying to make their lives and the world a better place. All of us residing somewhere in the 99%.
BTW, lots of technogeeks in the Pearl Hood, behave yourselves Occupiers, their cameras will be on you…from all points, all day.
Speak for yourself, I pay my taxes and support the occupy movement.
I see where you’re coming from Eric and the only appropriate reply I can come up with here is this:
Support the mentally challenged…..TAKE A TEABAGGER TO LUNCH !!!!!!!
I can understand that it is a bit of a pain to allow people to gather in large numbers in public places. It’s simply not convenient. But let’s put things in perspective. If people are going to express their frustration and resentment towards a government who through corruption have allowed corporations to plunder this nation to the brink of ruin, then maybe we all need to allow things that are not convenient.
Money powers you and so that’s why you don;t get it Eric. WAKE UP.
You need to pick your battles wisely. Choosing to illegally inhabit another park near many of the Portland residents, who coincidentally believe strongly in our message, will only make enemies of the very people that support us. I work near the park and have talked to many of the residents about your proposed move to the park and they are not happy about the strategy. It’s been very clear that occupying another park will only cause tension between the movement and the officials that have turned a blind eye to the issues this current demonstration has caused. Don’t turn your silent friends into your enemies, because they can and will speak out in a much louder voice if you disturb them.
Well said
“One woman felt so compelled to join the demonstration early Friday that she parked her 11-year-old son with strangers at a convenience store, so she could pitch in and wash dishes with protestors in Chapman and Lownsdale squares. Police reunited mother and son without incident.”
Nice…..
First, your “uppity” comment proves your ignorance. The Pearl District in incredibly diverse and to say the contrary is ignorant. Second, no other “Occupy” group has occupied a residential neighborhood. This is no different than if they camped out in a neighborhood park in NE Portland, Tigard, Beaverton, Gresham, Oregon City, etc. If they choose to camp in Jamison Square, they’ll be invading the privacy of a neighborhood and violating the civil rights of those who live there. My personal waning support for Occupy will disappear completely if they decide to set up camp in a neighborhood, be in the Pearl, NE Portland, or some suburb.
This is rare, but I support Randy Leonard. I also support Occupy Portland and have been there several times. However pushing it to Jamison Park is just juvenile and will just enrage me. Jamison Park is in a residential neighborhood, granted a glitzy one by Portland standards, but still a residential neighborhood. Absolutely not one person living in the Pearl District is part of the 1% of this country, and judging by the amount of foreclosures, short sales, and desperately late mortgage payments, you may have much support coming from this one district. I am afraid that support would quickly be converted with this absurd
To quote the email from Occupy Portland “The Portland Police, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, O.S.P., and even the National Guard could not arrest, detain, book, jail and process as many people as would be necessary for “order”, should You send Police in to disrupt a peaceful demonstration and march.
This is idiotic policy.
The A.L.C.U. has reserved seats on airplanes to fly Lawyers to Portland, in the case that “all Hell breaks loose.” I will be across the street filming video of everything”
They are now nothing more then a bunch of bullies who apparently want the entire city of Portland, it’s time our elected officials take a stand against them and call their bluff.
Average salary in the Pearl 55k-78k (give or take depending on where you get the data….) Pretty distant from that nasty 1% at 380K-500k (give or take depending on where you get the data). As far as total assets goe, any retiree living off of a pension of a million has a tough road to hoe, maybe stretching 40k/yr in returns over the next 20-30 yrs…good luck with that scenario.(still gotta pay your taxes, medical insurance, etc…)
WHAT THE TOP 1%, 5%, 10%, 25% and 50% MAKE IN AMERICA
Based on the Internal Revenue Service’s 2010 database below, here’s how much the top Americans make:
Top 1%: $380,354
Top 5%: $159,619
Top 10%: $113,799
Top 25%: $67,280
Top 50%: >$33,048
I agree with what ralley said: “They are now nothing more then a bunch of bullies who apparently want the entire city of Portland, it’s time our elected officials take a stand against them and call their bluff.”
Please do not occupy Jamison Square. Your support has been growing all week and will only decline if you confront the city on this isssue.
COMING SOON, TO A PARK NEAR YOU…..
Police have made 2 more arrests related to the “Occupy Portland” camp. The first arrest was for a drug related Parole Violation warrant. 28-year-old William Duke was recognized from previous police contacts. He was sitting on a bench in the park and was arrested without incident. Later in the evening officers also arrested 34-year-old Tara Akridge. She was found to have a Parole Violation related to having Methamphetamine on her. Akridge identified herself to the police as the “Resource Director” for “Occupy Portland” and said she is currently living in the camp. A short time later, officers discovered that the side view mirror of their patrol car had been broken off as it was parked on Southwest Main Street between 2nd Avenue and 3rd. There are no suspects at this time.
Seriously it’s time to pack it in… Portland Police have incurred over $183,000 in overtime costs alone since the occupation started. There is no way this ends well unless the occupy folks decide to pack it up and go home. The police WILL eventually remove you, and I will gladly being them lunch and hot coffee to assist their efforts. Sam Adams, you are a loser and it’s time to stand up to the oath you took to the citizens of this state and city. Enforce the laws you swore to uphold!!!!
THERE ARE 495,000 PDX’S IN THE 99%. ONLY 1,000 OF THEM NEED TO SHOW UP AT THE NIGHTLY GENERAL ASSEMBLY WHICH STARTS AT 7 PM AND VOTE EVERY PROPOSAL DOWN…OR TWINKLES DOWN AS THE CASE MAY BE. THE STATEMENT BELOW IN FACT ENCOURAGES PARTICIPATION FROM ALL THE 99%.
TAKE BACK YOUR CITY PORTLAND, THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT REPRESENTING YOU AND IN FACT TARGETING EVERYONE IN THE TOP 50%. THIS MEANS YOU!
“We are an open assembly, designed to welcome the 99% — with new people always arriving, people with profoundly different perspectives, experiences, needs, values, ideas. This diversity is valuable, a source of wealth.”
Two sections of the Oregon Constitution, Article 1, offer legal grounds for the Occupation.
Constitution of Oregon: 2010 Version
ARTICLE I
BILL OF RIGHTS
Section 1. Natural rights inherent in people. We declare that all men, when they form a social compact are equal in right: that all power is inherent in the people, and all free governments are founded on their authority, and instituted for their peace, safety, and happiness; and they have at all times a right to alter, reform, or abolish the government in such manner as they may think proper.
Section 26. Assemblages of people; instruction of representatives; application to legislature. No law shall be passed restraining any of the inhabitants of the State from assembling together in a peaceable manner to consult for their common good; nor from instructing their Representatives; nor from applying to the Legislature for redress of grievances

Dear City of Portland,
Please enforce the laws!
Staying at Jamison Park is poorly thought out cry for attention now that the occupation movement is petering out in the publics eyes. Think bigger people! Stop camping and start using your resources to inform the public and organize boycotts before you lose all of your supporters. I really would like to continue to support the movement but it seems to be going nowhere.
To those of you who have the guts to do what everyone else who is getting dumped on by big business and government are too spineless to do THANK YOU!
As to Jamison Park I have seen NO TENTS so it’s not a camp. I’m so sorry for those who live there you would rather be screwed by big business and the governments they have purchased have your middle-aged children your brothers and sisters and grandchildren homeless or dead than be inconvenienced for a few days out of your life. I sincerely hope you get just that. By the way how’s that disappearing retirement plan going the 1% say thanks sucker keep on complaining about the people who want to help you sucker!
I’m not an occupier I work too many hours to stay but I do support the movement and come to the protest often.
I agree with koosh. Please do not push for arrests at Jamison Square. I support the Occupation, have visited and have defended the protest to others. Pushing a confrontation with the police at Jamison Square will not further our cause.
Occupying Wall St/Occupy Portland and other Occupy sites will send a stronger message to corporations and government and show more solidarity with the 99% by keeping marches and occupations in financial and government agency areas.
What is the point of taking over an area in a neighborhood surrounded by businesses and households who for the most part are NOT the 1%? Not really very radical occupying a neighborhood park used mostly by working families and employees of area businesses. Want to make a statement? Stay focused on corporations and government corruption instead of disrupting the live of those you could be building community and gaining support from.
May wisdom and peace prevail – may the occupy movement help galvanize, represent and unite the 99%!
