Bus is not guaranteed.

If bus does happen…..

Bus trip will a number of days, round trip estimated from previous experience with NU providing buses is around 5 days there 5 back, being at OWS for 4 to 5 days. NU will let us know after we secure the numbers going.

We need to have a very accurate count of those than can surely attend because of the cost, paid for by the Nurses Union. Their concern is because Nato cost 100K and some seat were not filled from west coast.

We all may have to help convince the Nurses union that we mean to go by giving a 5 dollar donation to secure a seat (If you can’t find 5 dollars to get a round trip ride across country then…) I will help anyone figure out how to raise money if need be.

So if you cannot go please let Jessica or me know and we will remove you from page, for a few days so we can have an accurate count, you can rejoin after we figure who is going and when, if we can convince NU that we know who is going and will not change their mind. Smile.
Also for those interested in going, OWS has created this handy guide:

Of course police across the country are responding by cracking down on the dangers posed by hopscotch. This Friday, August 17th Occupy Portland’s weekly Bank Action is going on a “Chalkupy Bank Tour.” The Bank Actions have been growing every week, so if you haven’t been to one yet, hope to see you at Pioneer Courthouse Square at 2pm Friday! This Friday, Occupy the Banks will be hosting it’s first Chalkupy Bank Tour! Last week one of our own was almost arrested for chalking on a sidewalk. Occupy the Banks is designed to be an on-going weekly action hosted by Occupy Portland in collaboration with organizations, groups, or community members to apply continuous coordinated pressure on the three mega-banks, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and JP Morgan Chase. The general plan for Occupy the Banks is that three Fridays per month we host an action at any branch of one of the three target banks, on the fourth Friday we focus on outreaching to small businesses about the value of moving their money, while offering tools to facilitate that transition.
The OHS students are crafting their message. Adults who would like to offer friendly and positive support to our students are welcome to join us outside of the main entrance to OHS on North Street from 7:00-7:45.

We are asking all of our adult supporters to:

1.) Wear Olympia Bear colors of blue and white

2.) Not bring any signs, but rather support student and their rally for community unity against hate, bullying and harassment

3.) Please support the guidelines that have been given to our students which include:

Being respectful and safe

Not engaging with any protesters

Staying on the school side of the temporary barriers

Following all school rules and state laws

4.) Park at The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd on the corner of Henderson and North Street

We believe this is a great opportunity to showcase the incredible class and dignity of our student body and local community. We think this is something that can bring us all together and make us a stronger school and community and we are inspired and proud to see so many people who are passionate around making a difference and standing up against hate in our community. Thanks for your support and for making our schools and community a positive and welcoming environment for all people.

Portland, OR – Police arrested ten members of labor unions, faith groups, neighborhood organizations, and Occupy Portland who refused to leave the University Station post office at closing time this evening. Unfurling two ten foot banners, reading “Occupy the Post Office” and “No Closures! No Cuts!” the protesters blocked the closure of the retail window while a rally of over a hundred supporters chanted outside. Earlier a line of demonstrators had marched through the office, delivering postcards addressed to the Postmaster General.

“The Postmaster General’s plan to close processing plants, delay mail delivery, and cut hours in the nation’s post offices will not fix the postal service’s financial crisis,” said Jamie Partridge, an arrestee from Occupy Portland. “Congress manufactured the crisis and Congress or the President will fix it. If the PMG can’t wait, he should step down and allow in someone who will protect the postal service.”

“People from across Portland are coming out to show that we value our public services and we will not allow those services to be sabatoged by corporate interests. Today we defend the Post Offices, but we know that these public services – our Post Offices, our libraries, our parks, and even our schools are all the target of corporate interests profit-driven machines, says Laurie King, organizer with Occupy the Post Office. “We are coming out to say that all communities deserve access to the mail service, and we will not have it handed over to the highest bidder.”

The Postmaster General is poised to close half the nation’s mail processing plants, including Portland’s Main Office, while reducing hours from 25% to 75% at 13,900 post offices. Donahoe is also pushing for an end to door-to-door and Saturday delivery. Organizers say that the financial problems that USPS is experiencing is due to a funding mandate passed by Congress in 2006 that requires the USPS pre-fund retiree health benefits 75 years in advance. This law was a product of ALEC and its Congressional members who focus on shrinking and privatizing public services. Community members are pressuring Congress to pass bills HR 3591 and S 1853 which will repeal the pre-funding mandate and protect the Postal Service.

“USPS is financially sound, the Congressional mandate to pre-pay benefits for 75 years is shackling the Post Office. This is clearly a part of Wall Street’s plan to privatize and destroy an honored institution of our community,” says Lataya Dailey, an organizer with Occupy St Johns. “The Postmaster is complicit in this plan to gut and cut our community Post Offices. We demand he resign immediately.”

This action was part of an on-going effort by a community coalition to support the Postal Service by Occupy St Johns, Occupy Portland, the Rural Organizing Project and Jobs with Justice.

Occupy St Johns and Occupy Portland are part of the international Occupy Movement fighting against the inequality of wealth and power in our existing economic and political systems. Jobs with Justice is coalition of labor organizations and community groups dedicated to protecting the rights of working people and supporting community struggles to build a more just society. JWJ has been an active supporter of public infrastructure like the Post Office since its founding in 1992.

Dear brothers and sisters,

We got our asses kicked on 1 MAY.

Already some of our fellows have been experiencing symptoms of PTSD (Post traumatic stress disorder).
Criteria includes: direct personal experience or witnessing an event involving death or threat of death or serious injury. It can even include hearing about an event that involved a loved one. First response could include fear, helplessness, or horror. Symptoms can manifest as intrusive thoughts re-experiencing the event, avoidance, isolation, numbing of general responsiveness, and an increased sense of arousal (not the good kind).

The symptoms cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupation, or other important areas of functioning. Let’s not forget nightmares, dissociative states, amnesia, psychic numbing, feeling detached, sense of foreshortened future, difficulty concentrating, irritability, emotional outbursts of anger. Also triggering i.e. when an event resembles or symbolizes the trauma such as the weather or a smell or a sound. Sleeping disorders and restricted range of emotion are common.

Do not despair. Symptoms usually resolve. If you are still having symptoms after a month you should consult a professional (moms and grandmas are not good at treating all the aspects of PTSD). You are not crazy (well some of you are but not because of this). This condition involves changing neuronal pathways to protect us from this insult to our mortality and sense of well being. Although possibly adaptive to traumatic events it is not the way we want to live our daily lives.

It will destroy relationships and meaningful lives. Let’s not let this dysfunctional pathway get ingrained in our brains. If you are affected it is probably a good idea to stay away from contentious events until you are back on your feet. Let’s help each other. Let’s protect each other. We are one. You are not alone. nihil illegitimus carborundom
