Tax Dodgerball 1% vs. 99%
The 1% have dodged taxes long enough. Watch the 99% level the playing field!
This year on tax day, come see an exhibition dodgeball tournament pitting the 1% against teams of janitors, struggling homeowners, city workers, postal workers and other members of the 99%.

Rally and “Bake Sale” at City Hall with Laborers’ Local 483
4:00pm-5:00pm, City Hall, 1221 SW 4th Ave
Budget cuts still loom large at the City of Portland. Should our city have to organize bake sales for public bathrooms, garbage collection, pre-school, & street repair? We say NO! Help us remind City Council to put community needs first and to work for real solutions, not cutbacks and layoffs.

March to MAX for free ride to the Post Office
While we ride the MAX, we will support the Amalgamated Transit Union 757 and OPAL who are fighting fare hikes and service cuts at Trimet.

5:30-6:30pm, Portland Main Post Office, 715 NW Hoyt
No Taxes Needed to Save America’s Postal Service.
Informational Picket & Leafleting: Stop the Closures! No Service Cuts!
Help prevent a massive wave of closures of mail sorting plants and post offices. Community actions have postponed the closures until May 15th. We need to push further to protect jobs and our postal service for good.

PRESS RELEASE – April 11, 2012
Parkrose and Gresham-Barlow Educators
Vote to Authorize Strikes

At separate meetings, members of the Parkrose Faculty Association (PFA) and the Gresham-Barlow Education Association (GBEA) voted in overwhelming majorities to authorize their respective bargaining teams to call for a strike in their bargaining crises with their districts.

Both local union bargaining teams will follow the statutory process and give the district a minimum of 10 days notice before striking. GBEA members announced an April 25 strike date. PFA members have not established a strike date yet.

Jerry Landreth, teacher and PFA member: “For months we have been bargaining with our district over a variety of issues. The district has not been constructive in this process. The district seeks to change our workload and to negatively affect our ability to plan quality instruction for our students.” Additional issues include the Parkrose School District demanding to take $700 out of PFA members’ pockets, per month, for the next five months to pay for the district management’s deficit. This comes out of the district acting unilaterally about cuts to the working school year without bargaining these changes with its employees.

Jerry Landreth: “This $700 per month for the next five months will mean many of us losing our mortgages. This would affect our families. Many of us are living paycheck to paycheck as it is. Many of us are parents in this district. Many of us will not be able to afford living here anymore. That goes too far.”

GBEA members face similar bargaining tactics from their district affecting working conditions. Regina Norris, teacher and GBEA member: “For months we have been bargaining with our district over a variety of issues. Meanwhile the district has taken the strong action of implementing most of its onerous proposal on us. The district seeks to change our workload and to negatively affect our ability to plan quality instruction for our students. The district needs to bring its available resources to the classroom. The district needs to provide for planning time and a reasonable workload to ensure we have the ability to create quality lessons for our students.

FUNDRAISER

There is no set entrance fee, but donations are encouraged because the event is in part a fundraiser for two Occupy Portland protesters;
David Burgess and Justin James Bridges.

David Burgess is an activist for peace and justice who was marching
peacefully with other Occupy Portland marchers in early November when he was attacked by police and wrongly accused of pushing a Portland police officer into an oncoming Trimet bus. Since that time, David has incurred mounting legal expenses along with medical bills as a result of injuries he sustained when attacked by police officers.

Justin James Bridges is a local musician who participated in the
Occupy Portland encampment. On the last Saturday night at the
encampment he performed at Terry Shrunk Plaza, but by the next night he was hospitalized from injuries sustained when police attacked remaining protesters who were attempting to peacefully hold the encampment after the mayor’s orders to vacate. Since that time, Justin has accumulated thousands of dollars in medical bills and legal expenses.

FEATURING

* THE WANDERLUST CIRCUS (performance) - http://wanderlustcircus.com/
“The ways of the Circus are older than the nightclubs, older than the banks, older than the cities. These most ancient of performative traditions have always existed just slightly to the left of the Mundane World. Now, at the first flickering of the 21st Century, our piebald clan is once again shedding its skin and remaking itself in the funhouse mirror image of The Second Great Depression.”

* THE SPROCKETTES (performance) - http://sprockettes.org/
“The Sprockettes are an all-female-identified mini-bike dance troupe that specializes in fun, community, positive body image, and sisterhood. They were founded in 2004, and have been rockin’ the hot pink and black ever since. They function as a collective, making decisions by consensus, and support DIY and value all voices in their day-to-day operations. They stand with the Occupy movement to make positive change to our environment, culture, and society.”

* WESICKBOSS (live soul funk band) - http://wesickboss.com/
“We play Soul Music.”

* Justin James Bridges & Friends -www.reverbnation.com/justinjamesbridges
“Born deep in the heart of the great state of Texas, he started playing guitar in Dec 2003 and has been addicted ever since. With his band Leprechaun Theory he played South by Southwest in 2008 as well as 2010. Now, JJB is a member of The Houston Blues Society and has had the pleasure of working with Local Live Media, an online raido station.” - http://locallivehouston.com/

* MIC CRENSHAW - http://www.miccrenshaw.com/
“Born on the south side of Chicago, and raised in both Chicago and Minneapolis, Mic is a world class MC and poet now emerging on the national – and international stage. After significant music and social work in Minneapolis Mic moved to Portland where he quickly became one of the most respected artists in the Northwest. In 2001, Crenshaw won The Portland Poetry Slam Championship and went on to finish as a national finalist. In the coming years he became the driving force for some of most popular hip hop artists in the region, including Hungry Mob, Suckapunch and Cleveland Steamers, releasing numerous albums.”

* DAVID ROVICS (folk) - http://davidrovics.com/
“David Rovics grew up in a family of classical musicians in Wilton, Connecticut, and became a fan of populist regimes early on. By the early 90′s he was a full-time busker in the Boston subways and by the mid-90′s he was traveling the world as a professional flat-picking rabble-rouser. These days David lives with his family in Portland, Oregon and tours regularly on four continents, playing for audiences large and small at cafes, pubs, universities, churches, union halls and protest rallies. He has shared the stage with a veritable of who’s who of the left in two dozen countries, and has had his music featured on Democracy Now!, BBC, Al-Jazeera and other networks. Most importantly, he’s really good. He will make you laugh, he will make you cry, he will make the revolution irresistible.”

* ARLO STONE (comedy) - http://www.myspace.com/arlostone
“Comedian, Occupier, anarchist, and demonstrator. Arlo has been around the block once or twice and will be sure to tickle your funny bone in some of the oddest places imaginable!”

There has been a considerable amount of work and toil accomplished in our organization. Many have expressed the need of getting more help and support in this work. I have never before engaged in this type of detailed organization nor activism in my life and i have feel the burden of responsibility quite often, but i somehow continue to agree to take on more tasks because of the dire need for our movement to work for the good of all. I’m sure others are very familiar with this tendency to fill in the spots that require extra attention. Our volunteering system, frankly, is lacking and underdeveloped. And there is a quaint flow of new people eager to help. But we can do a lot better, and accomplish our multitude of tasks, and feel less burdened if our responsibility were smartly shared.

Well, we have thought of a way to to get more assistance through volunteering, AND, handsomely rewarding those who happen to be a student of colleges and universities. We have decided to accept inquiring students to become interns for Occupy Portland. Students who volunteer with us can get college credit for helping us organize and perform needful tasks. This is a wonderful way to bring the fire of Occupy to the education system and infiltrate the curriculum. Students will learn our values with first hand experience and turn around and teach and influence their peers, co workers and those careers. This is a beautiful outreach method. After we accept a team of these interns to help organize and facilitate our affairs we will be more productive, more unified, less stressed and advancing this revolution in countless ways.

I’ve circulated a statement drafted by Portland teachers today during my lunch hour. The more I think of it, the more ridiculous this is and I’m using PPS email now to send out this statement.

http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2101745_2102138,00.html

Here is our letter. I have hard copies that I’ve already gather over 20 signatures on and other teachers are gathering signatures at other schools in and outside of PPS. Please continue to sign on by email and on my hard copies. It is time that teacher occupy our professions and not allow unelected billionaire philanthropes dominate education policy!
——————————————————————————

We, the undersigned educators, are dismayed by the recent incident at Astor School where members of the Occupy Portland Panel, an educational branch of the Occupy Portland movement, were thrown out of a classroom of sixth and seventh graders after they began talking to students about U.S. foreign wars and house foreclosures. After a school employee interrupted the discussion, the Occupy Portland guests were told by the teacher that, “the school district is not comfortable with us having this conversation,” and then escorted out of the building. The decision to end the panel came from Astor Principal Karl Newsome. Portland Public Schools spokesman Matt Shelby is quoted in the Portland Mercury backing the principal’s decision citing a district procedure that calls for principals to sign off when outside groups are brought in and asserting that the teacher should have let parents know before inviting the Occupy Portland Panel to Astor.

We reject the idea that teachers would need to notify parents or obtain principal approval before bringing Occupy speakers to their classrooms. This is a violation of the professional discretion and academic freedom of teachers. Obviously, the permission of parents and the school principal is not always required when guest speakers come to class. So why in this instance? Can the school district cite any occasion when a principal required a teacher to notify parents prior to a presentation from a representative of a Portland area business, a government agency, or the U.S. military? Are parents notified when teachers use Junior Achievement curriculum materials, funded by large corporations like UPS, ExxonMobil, and Goldman Sachs? Is it school district policy that only individuals who are engaged in social justice activism are so profoundly controversial and threatening that their presence in schools requires parental permission? And what message does this send to students, when one group is singled out as so potentially problematic? As educators, we object to this attack on academic freedom and the discriminatory enforcement of school district policies.

We believe that too often the standardized curriculum teaches a particular point of view and that it is important for educators to bring in groups like Occupy to offer our students greater curricular balance. For example, the Contemporary Economics textbook, adopted by PPS, teaches that income inequality is caused by differences in household sizes, that the best predictor of poverty is whether family members are employed, that welfare tends to create cycles of poverty, and that military spending has been decreasing while “income redistribution” has vastly increased. The global studies adoption, Modern World History, includes a single “critical writing” activity in its treatment of the war in Iraq: “Imagine you are a speechwriter for President Bush. Write the introductory paragraph of a speech to coalition forces after their victory in Iraq.” The text includes no critical perspectives from groups or individuals opposed to U.S. involvement in Iraq.The district should not place restrictions on teachers’ efforts to offer their students a rich and varied — and socially relevant — curriculum.

Lastly, the school district must live up to its commitment to equity. When one-fifth of PPS students live in poverty, one third in David Douglas and Parkrose live in poverty, and 55 percent of all American children live in families that are near poverty, we should be encouraging all teachers to invite Occupy activists into their classroom to discuss issues of inequality and social justice.

Passed around during the march with labor on Oct. 26, 2011

As occupiers at Occupy Portland, we stand in solidarity with organized and unorganized working people, the underemployed and unemployed masses of Oregon. We object to corporate greed and the systematic destruction of workers rights and living wage jobs; and we call for substantive economic and political changes that empower and represent the people!

On October 6th, Occupy Portland kicked off with dozens of local labor unions and thousands of other workers in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street. We are the 99% and we demand economic and political systems that work for the 99%! It is objectionable that corporations dominate power, wreck havoc on the lives of ordinary people and desecrate our natural environment.

Together, we insist on living wage jobs, fair labor practices and workers rights across all sectors of production. We insist on economic justice and support for our unemployed, underemployed and unemployable brothers and sisters.

The occupiers of Occupy Portland greatly appreciate the support of organized labor and the people of Portland. You have contributed immensely to the support and operation of the occupied camp, including everything from portable toilets and sanitation, to food and coffee, to shelter from the rain and cold; and many more direct, in-kind and anonymous donations.

You have been loud and outspoken in your support of the occupation and for the national Occupy Movement. As occupiers at Occupy Portland, we understand that we represent only a small fraction of people who are giving visibility to this call for change. And like you, we will not call for an end to Occupy Portland until we see substantive economic and political change in Oregon and the U.S.

Please continue to give your support to the Occupy Portland occupation in whatever way you can. Many resources are needed to support the occupy camp. Passionate people are needed to join working groups and committees. Supporters are needed to give visibility to the movement by their presence in and around the camp.

You can find a list of these needs on needs page the OccupyPDX.org website. You are invited to contact the Media-Press Committee at Press@OccupyPDX.org for ways to connect messaging to a wider audience; and you are also invited to join with the local-national Outreach Committee at Outreach@OccupyPDX.org to link up occupation work with broader communities.

Laborers’ Local 483 Municipal Employees:

Letter to Occupy Portland.

Dear Protestors of Occupy Portland,

We are the 900 member public employee union who build and maintain the infrastructure of your City of Portland, including the roads upon which you march today, the wastewater treatment facilities for the public toilets you use, and the parks that you occupy. We support your efforts through our daily labor. More than that, the Executive Board of Laborers’ Local 483 stands in solidarity with the Occupy Together movement to confront the injustice of economic inequality, the scapegoating of working class people, the vilification of labor unions, the exploitation of the unemployed and underemployed, and the corporate takeover of the Americas and the world.

We know you are committed to this fight. We have watched what is unfolding on Wall Street in admiration of the protesters’ courage and in dismay of the apathetic and sometimes brutal response of those in power. We support your “re”-occupation but ask you not to greatly endanger your health and welfare. We need you to stand with us over the coming years. After your occupation is over, it is our deepest wish that you settle in a comfortable place — hopefully a warm, dry home with your friends or family. Your sacrifices won’t be so visible then but your work will be far from over. We ask you to stand up for democracy every single day at your workplaces. Organize with your rank-and-file co-workers no matter what their political beliefs or background. Form or join a union. If you don’t have a job, join us to demand a public works program with living wages and benefits for education, rebuilding of infrastructure, and public transit improvements. When Occupy Portland is over, we will still be standing with you.

Laborers’ Local 483 unites with Occupy Portland. You are the hope for the future.

In solidarity,

The Laborers’ Local 483 Executive Board.
