Hanford: North America’s Fukushima

First, Hanford is the largest nuclear waste site in the world. It began when the Manhattan Project needed a place to build nukes for war. It has become, over time, a graveyard for nukes, for nuke pollution, i.e. uranium and plutonium waste as well as many unknown liquids posing incredible problems for the intended cleanup due to the simple fact that they are unknown. If you don’t know if something is going to explode while you are trying to clean it up, you’re not very likely to want to clean it up.A note: Hanford was chosen for the Manhattan Project because the group hired by the gov’t to look for the perfect location, decided that this land was not only uninhabited, but also a waste zone with nothing growing there. Of course, these were lies. The Yakima Nation lived there and still does. There was a very large community of Native Americans on the land, living off of the land and practicing their spirituality from the land and from what the land gave them. Now, the land is decimated. It is polluted. With uranium waste. With plutonium waste. The air is polluted. The waters, the beautiful Columbia River that runs from Canada down thru WA and OR is polluted. The fish are dying. The elk that roam the lands around Hanford are dying and sick. The soil is unusable. And the people from the local Indian Nations are dying from cancers related to nuclear fallout.

So why rally around Hanford for oversight and honoring the Tri-Party Agreement?

Because it affects all of us in the United States. When the people of our first nations die due to government carelessness, we must care! These are the people who taught the white man about the importance of making decisions which always concern 7 generations into the future. The world is not ours. It is our future’s world.

Why rally around Hanford for oversight and honoring the Tri-Party Agreement?
Because we expect our government to do what it says it will do. To spend money to clean up its messes. To honor agreements made between itself and the Yakima Nation, the Nez Perce and the Umatilla of the Northwest when it said that if they pollute the Indian lands, they will clean it up or pay for it. Neither has happened to the degree which is necessary.

Why rally around Hanford for oversight and honoring the Tri-Party Agreement?
Because there is no real oversight for the cleanup at Hanford and because of that, workers work in unsafe environments; nuclear spills are happening without public knowledge; money is changing hands from the government to the 1% who are the Bechtel owners, the main contractors at Hanford, and the money is not spent on cleanup.

Why rally around Hanford for oversight and honoring the Tri-Party Agreement?
Because there is a leased out working nuclear facility on Hanford’s grounds called The Columbia Generating Station which was built by the exact same design as Fukushima. The difference is that these buildings contain 4 times the amount of spent nuclear fuel rods in each building as did the Fukushima Reactor that blew up in Japan. We are expecting a large earthquake anytime now as reported by our scientists.

Why rally?
Because it’s the right thing to do. This is about the next 7 generations and then 7 more and 7 more after that. The half-life for some nuclear waste is 250,000 years. Come to the rally and speak out against the wrongs. Encourage the change.

Key Points
1. Hanford has a working nuclear power plant on its grounds which is called The Columbia Generating Station. It is the exact same design as Fukushima’s but holds 4x’s the amount of spent nuclear fuel rods in each bldg. Imagine an earthquake ripping thru there. And expect one.

2. The Tri-Party Agreement between the Yakama, Nez Perce and Umatilla Indians is not being taken seriously by the DOE. They need to clean up Hanford completely, which is impossible, and re-pay the nations for all that Hanford has destroyed.

3. Outside oversight of the cleanup is the only way to make things happen. To have oversight, the congress needs to agree that it is necessary and create an oversight committee. This needs pressure from us, the people, to make it happen. ( Will be posting a sample letter that you can send to Congress soon.)

4. North America needs to know that Hanford is THE LARGEST NUCLEAR WASTE FACILITY IN THE WORLD and nuclear waste IS in the ground water wells in the tri-cities, in the food they grow, in the air, in the animals and IT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR KILLING MANY PEOPLE, tho the link is unproven!

MOVE TO AMEND AND ALLIANCE FOR DEMOCRACY OCCUPY THE COURTS

National Day of Action for a Constitutional Amendment Making Clear that Corporations are Not People and Money is Not Speech

Portland, Oregon – On January 20, 2012, at 11:30 a.m., hundreds of citizens will gather at Pioneer Courthouse Square for a rally and march calling for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which makes clear that corporations are not people and money is not speech. This is a national day of action just one day before the second anniversary of the infamous Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which held that corporations (as people entitled to the rights protected by the U.S. Constitution) can spend unregulated sums of money in order to influence elections. The Portland event is one of over 130 rallies in cities and at federal courthouses around the country, including the U.S. Supreme.

Neither the Declaration of Independence, nor the Constitution mentions corporations, which were rare entities at our nation’s founding. However, thanks to decades of rulings by Justices who molded the law to favor elite interests, corporations today are granted rights that empower them to deny citizens the right to full self-governance. Armed with these rights, corporations wield ever-increasing control over jobs, environmental protections, elected officials, even judges and the law.

“Corporations are not persons and possess only the privileges citizens and their elected representatives willfully grant them,” said David Delk of Move to Amend Portland. Move to Amend, supported by hundreds of thousands of people, across the county proposes a Constitutional Amendment that will overturn the Court-created legal doctrines of corporate personhood and “Money Equals Speech.”

On January 12, 2012, the Portland City Council adopted a resolution supporting such a Constitutional Amendment. With passage of this resolution, Portland joins the city councils of Los Angeles, CA, New York, NY, and Duluth, MN, which have all passed similar resolutions. “The resolution is a huge first step toward giving power back to the people and restoring democracy for the 99%; now it’s Congress’ turn,” said Erin Madden of Occupy Portland. Occupy the Courts is a manifestation of the frustration of citizens with the increasing corporate control of our government and the momentum building across the country for an amendment that puts the power back in the hands of “We the People.”

Speakers at the event will include Adam Klugman, host of “Mad as Hell in America” on KPOJ 620AM; David Delk with Move to Amend Portland; Erin Madden with Occupy Portland; and Barbara Dudley with the Working Families Party. The Raging Grannies will provide musical entertainment and the Supreme Court “Justices” will also attend and provide great photo opportunities.

Sponsors of the event include KBOO Community Radio, Alliance for Democracy, Move to Amend, the Economic Justice Action Group of the First Unitarian Church, and Occupy Portland.
People’s Cinema looks to highlight historical and contemporary films and short videos that are socially conscious, artistically legitimate and most importantly crowd pleasing, with political education and crowd discussion as our desired goal. We also want to make the series as participatory as possible and want suggestions from the audience about other films we need
to know about so we can compile a publicly accessible list of great radical films and show some of them as the series goes on. We feel the first film is particularly relevant to the the Occupy movement, as it deals with a mass uprising that happened in 2006 in Oaxaca, Mexico
wherein the population set up a 6 month encampment in the main square of Oaxaca City demanding the resignation of the corrupt and authoritarian governor.

Un Poquito de Tanta Verdad (A Little Bit of So Much Truth)

In the summer of 2006, a broad-based, non-violent, popular uprising exploded in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. Some compared it to the Paris Commune, while others called it the first Latin American revolution of the 21st century.

But it was the people’s use of the media that truly made history in Oaxaca. A 90-minute documentary, Un Poquito de Tanta Verdad captures the unprecedented media phenomenon that emerged when tens of thousands of school teachers, housewives, indigenous communities, health workers, farmers, and students took 14 radio stations and one TV station into their own hands, using them to organize, mobilize, and ultimately defend their grassroots struggle for social, cultural, and economic justice.

Portland, OR – Occupy Portland and other West Coast Occupations are mobilizing caravans to converge in Longview, Washington when the first ship to be loaded for export arrives at the new EGT grain terminal later this month. Occupy Portland, Oakland, and Longview all passed a resolution calling for the Occupy movement to come together in Longview to stop “EGT’s attacks on our communities, our food supply and the jurisdiction of West Coast Longshore workers.”

Occupy is partially responding to the call to action from the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Counties Central Labor Council that asked “friends of labor and the 99% everywhere come to the aid” of the Longview community. EGT recently completed construction of a tax-payer subsidized grain elevator at the Port of Longview that the company is attempting to operate with non-Longshore Union workers.

EGT Development is owned primarily by Bunge Ltd, an international agribusiness holding company. Bunge has been accused of tax avoidance and of breaking labor laws in Brazil and in Argentina. Bunge North America has a history of union disputes and union busting in the United States. According to Greanpeace and Rainforset Action Network, Bunge, though soybean production, is a major contributor to rainforest destruction. They have also been accused of buying soy from plantations in Brazil blacklisted for using slave labor.

“Our demands of EGT and Bunge are based not only in worker’s rights, but also in food justice, environmental justice and international solidarity. Bunge is a Wall Street firm that has long history of bad business practices – exploiting workers and resources for profit, and now they are targeting the people in our community,” says Kari Koch with Occupy the EGT working group.

The empty grain ship is expected to arrive sometime in January with a US Military escort. This is the first known use of the US Military in a labor dispute on the side of management in 40 years. The San Fransisco Labor Council has condemned this use of the US Military.

Thousands of people, members of Occupy, union members, activists, the 99%, from all over the West Coast are expected to join Occupy Longview and the people of Longview to protest the loading of this ship and the actions of EGT and Bunge corporations.

The next meeting of the Occupy the EGT Working Group of Occupy Portland to organize Portland’s part of the West Coast caravan to Longview is at 6 pm Wednesday Jan. 18th at 6401 SE Foster.
