Announcement by 99 Unite Civic Forum:
In recent years, two major social movements began as a protest against economic policy: Tea Party (2009) and Occupy Wall Street (2011). Both movements had significant influence in social discourse of the nation, but they both over time became something that bore little resemblance to what they were originally designed. As a coherent organization, both Tea Party and Occupy are “dead,” having splintered into a patchwork of small, ineffective spin-offs pursuing different goals. But as a cultural phenomenon, they are much alive and continue to inspire conversations in our neighborhoods, in the popular culture, and inside the Beltway.
Is American national psyche incapable of sustaining a long-term popular movement? Is American society more prone to fads than other cultures? What are the strengths and weaknesses of populism in American history?
For “older” people: Do you find a parallel between this decade and the late 1960s/early 1970s? What did you learn from your experience?
And most importantly, what keeps the steam going? How can we harness the communities, relationship and culture for the betterment of society? How can we transform the culture to create a strategic and disciplined social movement with a long-range plan and definitive aims?
