Portland follow-up action @ ODOT HQ, 12/20/13
On the first week of December, Portland Rising Tide and Wild Idaho Rising Tide campaigned a week of direct actions to stop Omega Morgan and its plans to ship machine parts (“megaloads”) for the controversial Alberta Tar Sands through Umatilla, OR. The successful shutdown led a wave of 99% resistance against the Portland-based corporation, who has lobbied the State tirelessly to approve a viable route to export tar sands through the Pacific Northwest. Office occupations and protests were staged in Fife, WA and Hillsboro, OR, and blockade attempts were spawned in other cities suspected to have these “megaloads.” Disruptions also took place against General Electric, the “megaloads” manufacturer, and ODOT, who allowed the needed permits for the disastrous project.
On December 16, a “megaload” blockade occurred in John Day, where 15 people were arrested and bail was set at $10,000 per arrest, totaling $150,000. Only several arrestees were actively participating; others were observers or journalists standing nearby and clearly within their rights. Portland Rising Tide is currently collecting donations to free these arrestees and build legal resources for future resistance.
DONATE HERE to free the 15 so they may spend the holiday season with loved ones, not jail cells!
