I have a friend who can't participate on the 6th because he is going on a Sunday hike. In the year 2011, he like others, can still hike in a beautiful wilderness area and forget about climate change, the sixth great extinction event, acidification of the oceans and massive droughts and floodimg. He is affluent, but definitely one of the 99%. But), if 99% of the worlds climatologists are right, his escape time will end soon. A decade or two, every aspect of his life will be affected. There will be no escape. Last summer Pakistan had a 129 degree day. The year before 2/3 of their country was flooded. World food prices, while admittedly manipulated by commodity trading, are also higher than ever because of climate disaster. No soon, all of the 99%, not just the bottom 20% will feel the consequences of environmental collapse. Men, woman and children. If we continue, the foreclosure crisis, the too big to fail banking crisis, will look like good old days. The root of the problem is corporate domination- however sometimes symptoms kill

I agree that climate issues are a result of the problems associated with corporate power in our state and that they are not the major cause of the grievances of the 99%. However I also recognize the importance of such issues, and the clear connection they have in relation to the lack of separation between the corporations and our state. Therefore, when there is an event to bring awareness to such results of a nation controlled by money and greed, it is important that the occupation movement stands in solidarity. If those who occupy are aware of such connections then the power behind the movement can bring awareness to all areas where the control of the 1% is present. Focusing on the symptom rather than the cause is not always the most prudent reaction to injustice, however the urgency of the issue of the Keystone. XL Pipeline is significant and must be addressed.
Oil dependency and climate woes are very much apart of the demands of the 99% and the Occupation movement has incorporated such issues in there list of demands in their Declaration of Independence. https://sites.google.com/site/the99percentdeclaration/

The 99% will not be hijacked by the activist subculture. The activist subculture should respect that the only reason they're getting any attention is because of us, the 99%. They should focus on providing us with an outlet for our grievances against the 1%, instead of their current self-indulgent antics.

Intentionally getting arrested for no reason does not represent the 99%.

Protesting the Keystone pipeline does not represent the 99%.

Protesting American foreign policy does not represent the 99%.

The 99% are united by their economic fortunes. Economic issues are the only thing Occupy Portland is authorized to protest in the name of the 99%.

Everything else is the immoral hijacking of our movement by the activist subculture, and must stop.

I'd say one of the grievances of the 99% is the complete disregard for our delicate ecosystem because it'll make corporations like chevron an extra buck. Yes, its not one of the main issues, but a huge issue nonetheless and president obama is the only one who can make the decision and he's making it soon.

Ecological destruction is fundamentally about social justice. The current military governmental industrial is killing millions through what are essentially state sanctioned acts of eco terrorism. While the march is in solidarity with the Washington DC march, what it is fundamentally about is whether we will allow corporations and government to destroy life on this planet as we know it. Tar sands development is eco genocide at its worst. The fight for our planet is only beginning. Is this a 99% issue. Yes. Do we have time to ignore and focus solely on changing the power structure. No. Is the issue more central to our life and well being than protesting Tony examples about a financial transaction tax? I submit Yes. We will win on the tar sands issue no matter what. Approve the pipeline-the movement is radicalized. Disapprove- and momentum builds.

I'd like to say one more thing about the importance of being on target with your message. Do you want to continue to "spin your wheels" without gaining any traction with the 99%?...or do you want to gain approval of the 99% and get them on board with your message? It all depends on how you target your message...
