Join us march 22nd/23rd for a Pizza Sleepover, Pancake Breakfast and Postcard Campaign Kick-off. An opportunity to socialize, celebrate, and network. An ongoing Art Attack on Portland City Hall for their torturous policies affecting the 1000′s upon 1000′s of homeless, who are forced to seek sleep outdoors. Sponsored by the round-the-clock, over-year-long Occupy prayer vigil at City Hall. The postcards will be artistic and provacative, spotlighting Portland’s torturous policies. The postcards will carry people’s individual messages that they can mail to the City Hall employee of their choice. The pen is mightier than the sword. A lot of different groups and kinds of people can all join together on this most fundamental issue, safe SLEEP. Consider spending the night with us on Friday night “camped” around City Hall in defiance of the inhumane “camping” ban and in solidarity with our over-year-long direct-action/prayer-vigil and in solidarity with all those who have no bed.
Over a year ago, a small band of devoted Occupiers came together and created the “St. Francis Working Group” to plan well ahead about evolving our current Office and to prepare for the time if we do decide to move to another location. Now, with numerous General Assembly and Spokes Council approvals, as well as input from Info Team and FoOP, we have reached consensus that we will move to a more efficient and affordable location, but we need YOU to help make that happen. There are several reasons why this consensus has been reached. Accessibility has always been an issue at St. Francis Parish, as anyone coming into our office can attest. At the current location there is no parking nor a direct entryway, and with none of the windows facing the adjacent street, it is tucked away and easy to pass by. We wanted to downsize so we can begin allocating our funds to events and social projects again and focus less on Rent.

Moving to a new location is really an expansion of our movement by making the office more accessible, giving it better exposure and making it more efficient.

We will move into the new location by April 15th, with plans to have our Grand Opening this International Workers’ Day, May 1st. No definite space has been agreed upon, which means we are open to any tips of for-lease buildings around the Portland area. The ideal space should be around 300-600 square feet, being around $300-$500 per month. A store-front would be a great bonus, and we prefer neighborhoods with diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds as opposed to trendy gentrification or downtown skyscrapers. Please continue to make suggestions for potential new space by sending us an email or giving us a call.

Occupy continues to act as a nexus and support for the peace and social justice movement in Portland. This space would be used for committee/working group meetings, meetings for other socioeconomic justice movement groups, a contact point, information dissemination and network hub, a computer lab for activists to use, an art lab for projects related to our movement, and a library (like our current meeting space). We are continually grateful that we are still one of the few Occupy branches who has an indoor Office to call home, and are acutely aware of how our long-term success and influence could not have been made possible without it.

But we want to be clear that our movement is not centralized or trapped in our Office. So many different groups and offshoots have arose thanks to that fateful day in October 2011. There is an Occupy Beaverton, Occupy Gresham and Occupy St. Johns. There is Portland Action Lab , Community Supported Everything, Culture Mend, Rumorz Coffee, People’s Budget Committee, The City Hall Vigil, Bike Swarm andThe Portland Occupier among others: if it weren’t for Occupy, they may have never started. Of course, the branches don’t always acknowledge their roots (like budget cuts and Wall St. greed), but as the root, we are more than impressed how our city is being changed and our aspirations bearing fruit. We hope you’ll be the same once you take time to redefine grassroots, organizational success.

We have always appreciated our time at St. Francis and want to hold a night of celebration for their gracious cooperation. That includes Red & Black Cafe, a real added bonus whose work and values they’ve been keeping long before we existed. We are in the works of planning this night, stay tuned for the announcement, the calendar post, and the social media RSVPs.

We’ve set up an Indiegogo campaign to help fund our new meeting space here: OPDX Office Space 2.0. This is a pivotal time to recruit volunteers to staff our Office and join Info Team — if you want to sign up please contact us here: occupyportlandinfo@riseup.net or call 971-258-1006. Thanks for the continued, ongoing support: You really ARE the 99% rising up to action.

1975, a feminist law collective that represented both women and
organizations such as the Trojan Decommissioning Alliance and the
Portland Tenants’ Union. Ruth won the first lesbian custody case in
Oregon, and brought the first sexual harassment case in Oregon. In 1979
she went to work for the state legal services program where she
successfully brought suit to strike down Oregon’s refusal to pay for
Medicaid abortions and the first successful civil suit nationally
against a police department for failure to arrest a battering spouse.
She will talk about how they tried to run the CLP on feminist principles.

Ann Mussey was a member of a feminist collective in 1971 Portland called
Red Emma (after leftist organizer Emma Goldman) which was home to some
of the early founders of the Portland Women’s Health Clinic. She is
currently on the faculty at Portland State University in Women, Gender,
and Sexuality Studies teaching courses related to gender and sexuality
including queer activism.

Kristan Knapp joined the Red Emma Collective in 1972. She and Bonnie
Tinker worked with others to found Prescott House, a place for women
getting out of prison to readjust to society. By 1975, with the
development of feminist consciousness about institutionalized violence
against women, it evolved into Bradley-Angle House, the first shelter
for women escaping violence on the West Coast. From 2002-2009 Kristan
worked as Bradley Angle’s Development Director, and helped the
organization reconnect with its roots

May Wallace (formerly Susan Crawford) was a member of the Main Street
Gathering, a collective of activists working to create a just society.
She helped launch the Rape Relief Hotline in 1973 (now known as the
Portland Women’s Crisis Line). Presently she is an artist, activist and
recently retired art teacher.

History of Social Justice Organizing is an ongoing series of
presentations by activists and scholars on a wide variety of social
justice organizing topics in Portland and elsewhere. The mission of the
Center for Women, Politics & Policy is to increase women’s leadership in
public policy through targeted teaching and community service programs.
Using, wherever possible, locally produced and sustainable ingredients that are healthy and nutritious. A model that builds community, offers a hand up, and helps to end food waste.

Ne Si’ka is a full service restaurant in the quality food tradition that allows patrons to pay as they are able. Suggested prices will be posted and those with means can pay the suggested price, or more if they so choose. All proceeds will go into the non-profit and for fighting hunger. Those who are unable to pay will have opportunities to volunteer at the restaurant in whatever capacity they are willing or able. This may be in the kitchen, the community garden, or a variety of other options. No one is turned away for inability to pay. The goal is to create a completely non-biased and comfortable atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable and has a seat at the table. While we help to alleviate hunger and food insecurity, the broader intention is to help create and foster a greater sense of community.
Everyone, regardless of means, has the right to dine with dignity and have access to a quality, nourishing, thoughtfully prepared meal.

There are many goals surrounding our project. Some big, some small, but they all add up to building a stronger healthier community that works for everyone. Offering a hand up to those who need it while offering amazing and gratifying opportunities to those with the ability to help. All surrounding quality food from the heart.
