LIES is a new journal spearheaded by a feminist collective based in Oakland, Baltimore, Los Angeles and New York City. LIES is a communist journal against communists. LIES came out of our experience within struggles. The story of the journal is the intersecting narratives of these recent struggles and the gendered fault-lines that emerged within them. We met in the midst of these activities and we felt
the need to organize autonomously as feminists. The more we met, read, and wrote together, the more we desired to devise a theory and politics that is inchoate but at least our own. The journal is just that: a way to communicate, to be overcome by the feminist commune, to survive with lesser pain or better pain, to become a more precise and effective force.
LIES is the first journal of it’s kind.
LIES is a journal of materialist feminism. We find a materialist approach useful in our search for a a location within the set of practices called feminism, in our effort to clear a space in which our position within the social order becomes more intelligible. LIES resists the legacy of racism and transphobia that has plagued feminist organizing and strives to document how that legacy is not sufficient reason to reject autonomist feminist practices today. LIES draws its purpose and support from networks and circles of feminist, queer, and trans people, our friends and comrades to whom this journal is devoted.
